Are the attractions in these two cities similar?

Hi, my family is travelling to NZ in Dec, visiting places like Auckland, Rotorua, Quuenstown, Lake Tekapo and Christchurch. I want to find out if the experience and exhibits we will see at Auckland War Museum similar similar to what we will get at Te Puia in Rotorua. If they are similar, I may have to choose one, any suggestion which is better? How about the Maori show at Auckland Museum, is it similar to those offered at Te Puia? Again, if similar, which is better in your opinion?

Kia Ora Woodlands -

Auckland War Museum and its exhibits are based upon a comprehensive installation of things NZ - its history & important events, its culture, its natural habitat - and NZ's place in society - the world etc.

As part of the various installations - one part of the Auckland Museum focuses importantly on the indigenous Maori people, and their early settlement in NZ.

To showcase the significance of Maori settlement the Auckland Museum contains the world's best collection of Maori treasures.

The Museum provides a daily Maori performance (except 25 April) and other times when museum not open - Christmas Day? (check this).

The Auckland performers recite stories through their songs and actions about cultural values that are important to the major Maori tribe of Auckland - NgatiWhatua. In Auckland, you can engage with performers through photos and meet them after show.

Culture is very very important to Maori, and all Polynesian people throughout the Pacific.

The Te Puia cultural performance will tell the stories from the Rotorua Te Arawa tribe - stories differ according to events of the past and the current journey, from the Auckland tribe.

Te Puia is the arts and crafts centre of Rotorua - where living & new works are being created.

Again, different focus from Auckland.

And if it's a show (performance) and dinner you are seeking, the values are wider again from the focus displayed by Auckland Maori performers.

So , no two performances can be the same - when performed by two separate Maori regions.

Sorry, but I have to pass on selecting one above the other. Culture is relevant in Maoridom.

Hope this helps, and you can decide nearer time about your options/wishes/time-frame etc.

Ka kite.

Rotorua is a beautiful place!

If you do choose Auckland Museum, be careful to take all your valubles out of the car when you park up. Alot of break in's, especially rental cars.

Good advice about securing valuables, but it applies ( unfortunately) in all areas.

We have our fair share of lowlifes who target tourist spots for easy pickings.
