Accommodation for family of 5 touring NZ

My family are trying to organise a trip to NZ in July/August 2008. As a family of 5 (3 teenage children) it is going to be expensive but we wondered if there are any recommendations as to how best (and reasonably cheaply) we can stay together. We intend to tour across both north and south islands and will have a car. Whilst a 6 berth campervan is an option we wondered if there are any hotel/motel chains that can accommodate a family of 5 in one room across NZ.

All options considered.

Many thanks in advance and have a great Christmas to all TA's.

Many hostels also have family rooms, try bbh.co.nz and also many caravan parks have onsite caravans as well as cabins available. You will be pleased with teh variety and quality of accommodation available

I agree with Wondera. The Top 10 Holiday Parks are great in value for money and usually in good locations. Availability in July / August should be no problem but it is wise to book in advance. Mind you, you are going MID WINTER so campervanning can be VERY cold experience and you may be cheaper off with staying in self contained units at these holiday parks. New Zealand (especially the South Island) can be very cold in winter.

Hi Widley,

I went with my family (Mum&Dad and 3 of us 15,18&28) in March/April this year.

We used the BBH site to stay in dorms (we took them over!!) for places we were only staying 1 or 2 nights at and for our longer 4&5night stays we hired houses through www.holidayhouses.co.nz

this worked brilliantly for us and was very reasonable because we had our own space and kitchen plus washing machine etc.

We're planning to go back next year and will do the same.

Hope this helps, might be worth a look at least (some of the houses are out of this world!! especially the Queenstown ones!)

You may like to consider looking for 'cottage' or 'apartment' -style places. In Wanganui there are at least 2 B&B's that have a separate self-contained 2 or 3-bedroomed accommodation with full kitchen facilities etc. the cost per night is cheaper than motel accommodation and much roomier.
