Auckland to Paihia, via the Waipoua Kauri forest.

Hello

I am visiting New Zealand for the first time in March and can't wait. However have planned some long drives that may or may not be do-able, so any advice would be great.

I want to leave Auckland early and head to Paihia, but via the Waipoura Kauri Forest and Hokianga Harbour. Dont mind arriving in Paihia in the evening, but not too late. Is this possible.

The other main concern is Paihia to Coromandel, again is this possible? leaving early and arriving late, or would it be better to stop in Thames?

Thanks folks, any help will be much appreciated!

Both are certainly doable, it really depends on how often and long you stop for on your drive as to when you get there. Having said this there is no point in just driving for the sake of it, you'll miss all the scenic beauty of the trip and both trips pass through some stunning coastline and bush.

Auck-Paihia via the west coast without stops would be approx 5 hours, Paihia to Coromandel (depends where you're heading but say Whitianga) would be 7 hours, again without stops. You won't want to drive the last part of this trip in the dark, apart from the winding narrow roads you'll miss all the beautiful views and scenery.

As Zappers says, both drives are possible.

The Auckland, Waipoua Forest, Hokianga Harbour, Paihia drive is about 5 hours but is very windy in places.

It is a beautiful drive and definitely do-able in a day.

Paihia to Coromandel, I think Zappers may have slightly overestimated at 7 hours, but it does depend exactly where on the Coromandel you are trying to get to.

Paihia to Auckland is 3.5 hours, and then Auckland to Whitianga for example is only about another 2.5 hours.

Again, it is definitely do-able in a day.

LL, I err on the side of caution by adding an extra 1/2 hour or so in especially if the roads are winding and narrow, also allows for a couple of short toilet stops too! :)
