Auckland/Rotorua Itinerary - advice/suggestions

Hi everyone!

I will be visiting the north Island in March for 8 days and have done up an itinerary - any advice and/or suggestions are welcome! :)

Saturday 22/3

Arrive AKL at midday.

Get Airbus Express to Waldorf Bankside Apartments

Explore Queen Street

Walk towards Quay Street & Viaduct Harbour

Dinner by the waterfront

Sunday 23/3

Breakfast at Sky Tower

Explore Auckland city/central either by foot or hop on/hop off explorer bus

Monday 24/3

Get taxi to Apex Car Rentals

Pick up rental car and drive to Matamata for Hobbiton tour

Drive to Rotorua and check into Leisure Inn Rotorua

Skyline Rotorua for luge/gondola ride

Dinner at Fenton Street (?? aka Eat Street)

Tuesday 25/3

Wai-O-Tapu Geothermal Wonderland

Redwoods Whakarewarewa Forests after lunch

Tamaki Maori Village in the evening

Wednesday 26/3

Drive to Taupo

Orakei Korako Geothermal Wonderland

Check out Huka Falls and Lake Taupo

Possibly do jetboating at Lake Taupo

Drive back to Rotorua and explore Rotorua city/central

Polynesian Spa or Hells Gate Mud Spa in the evening

Thursday 27/3

Leave Rotorua

Waitomo Caves

Drive back to Auckland to Apex to drop off rental car

Get taxi back Waldorf Bankside Apartments

Last minute souvenir shopping in the afternoon/evening

Friday 28/3

Ferry to Devonport or Waiheke Island for day trip

Saturday 29/3

Check out of apartment and leave luggage there for the day

?? NOT SURE WHAT TO DO DURING THE DAY - any markets that we should visit?

Airbus Express back to AKL Airport for flight home in the evening

Please offer any advice and/or suggestions. Are there any major attractions that we have missed out that we should try and include? We were initially going to do a one way trip from Auckland/Rotorua/Wellington but have decided not to as my partner was against staying in a different city every night and having to pack our bags everyday and not being able to spend much time in each city and therefore missing out of major attractions.

Thank you all in advance!

Just one comment - Wai-o-tapu is half way between Rotorua & Taupo & takes 75-90 minutes to view depending on which route you choose. Better to do it on Wednesday than backtrack on Tuesday.

On Saturdays in Auckland there is La Cigale Farmers' Market:

However, would it make more sense to do your AKL stay for the first 4 nights and then Rotorua for the last 3, so that you go straight from Waitomo to the Airport?

Thanks zhuhai2007 for your reply! I have decided to do Wai-O-Tapu on the Wednesday now based on your comment. Just wondering which is the better geothermal experience for first timers to NZ between Wai-O-Tapu and Orakei Korako? I'm thinking of doing just the one geothermal experience now. Thinking of doing the Agrodome Farm Show on the Tuesday morning instead too.

Unfortunately we have booked our accommodation already and are unable to change it. We wanted to play it safe to make sure we get back to Auckland with plenty of time for last minute souvenir shopping.
