2 nights in Auckland then drive South - Need car in Auckland

Hi All,

Happy holidays!

We are planning to spend 2 nights in Auckland then drive south to Wellington.

Do I need a car in Auckland or is it easier to walk and take public transports?

Given how expensive the taxis are in Auckland, should I rent a car from the airport or is it better to rent a car from Auckland City when I am ready to leave Auckland?

Thanks for your advise.

We spent two nights (day and a half) in Auckland and did not have a car. The central area is compact and we walked around there. We took a hop on - hop off bus tour, but there is also public transit.

Here is some information I saved: Auckland transport: http://www.maxx.co.nz/

As an Aucklander, the advice on not needing a car would be correct. If staying in the central city, it is easy enough to navigate on foot. The suggestion of the HOHO bus is great, and the ferries to Devonport and outlaying islands are in the Downtown area, and should you wish to go further afield into the surrounding countryside, there day trips which all pick-up from the city.

Relax, and enjoy a hassle-free time without a car!

Hi,

Parking expenses are a negative point while you rent a car but it comes along with positive point of comfort and accessibility. Not all of auckland is jammed with traffic. I myself have been to Auckland and resorted to a car rental from Hertz. Hertz has a kiosk at the airport itself. If you need a car on arrival you can book it in advance. Since it is the peak season, i would strongly suggest you to do so. So, if you are okay to take the routes of public transports etc go ahead with it and when leaving for wellington rent one from the city. This will help you i guess.
