how many days need visit Auckland

I'll go northland for 8 days, my plan is use 5 days drive around Rotorua, Taupo and Waitomo caves.and rest of 3 day will stay in Auckland. At Auckland Do I still need rental a car or can use bus? I wanna to see Auckland Volcanic Field.we have 3 people. Any suggestion for 3 days at Auckland or 2 day is enough.

I think 3 days would be ideal. Also assume you need a car for your other trips so would keep it for 1 day in Auckland and have 2 without. Do a boat trip to rangitoto one of those days. Tie it in with trip to either devenport or waiheke.

In Auckland you will be able to get to many of the volcanic cones by bus, including Mt Eden and One Tree Hill which are probably the most popular to visit. They both have excellent views over the city. The craters still exist, as do the terraces created when Maori built fortifications to defend their territory from other tribes.

The Auckland Museum also sits on top of a smaller volcanic cone, and is easily accessible by bus. Another part of the Auckland volcanic field you might be interested in visiting is Rangitoto, an island at the entrance to Auckland Harbour. There are daily scheduled ferries going there.

It is quite possible to do without a car for 3 days in Auckland, although there are some nice trips to surrounding areas eg the Waitakere ranges and west coast beaches, where a car would be useful.
