Transport card?

Other than the HOP card which costs 10$, is there some transport card which I can use (rather than paying in coins/bills) for bus/ferry rides?

Something like a day pass travel card?

I may take a few bus rides within Auckland and a couple ferry rides

(2 days)

Thanks

Discovery Pass ($16 single, $23 couple or family)

All day unlimited travel on most public buses, trains and local ferries (Includes Devenport but not Waiheke Island)

Also the explorer bus ($40) Tourist bus which connects main tourist destinations around Auckland. More expensive but more direct as it is a dedicated tourist service.

$40 per day for explorer bus sound good but looking at their website, normally they're operating from 9-5 and the interval will be every hour. If we start early, to cover all attraction, do we have enough time?

Hi there - Explorer bus is 9-5 but runs every half an hour.....you do have plenty of time to cover everything, allowing for a couple of places on the route where you might stop for a couple of hours (eg. Museum and Domain, Parnell, Wynyard Quarter). It is a very good way of seeing the city

Please read the list of exclusions for the Discovery Pass carefully as it doesn't cover a lot of the commuter ferry services.

Should be noted that most if not all the places connected by the Explorer bus can also be reached by public transport. The services are just perhaps less direct. However that in itself can be a bonus as jaunting around on public transport can be a great lowcost way of picking up the cultural 'vibe' of a city.

On the MaXX website linked above, they have a good journey planner which makes it pretty easy to plan out a days travel. Google maps have something similar though not sure how they source their local bus data etc.

A neat trick with Google Maps journey planner (Directions) is that you can click on the print icon. When at the Print Preview page, you can choose to include the main large view map. And also individual small local maps showing each turn/diversion on the journey. (Plus additional option of a streetview photo but find that less useful)

The completed detailed map can be printed in hardcopy (most motels/hotels will do this for you at their reception desk). Or you can download it as a pdf to your electronic device (Netbook, smartphone etc) Google Maps has recently introduced a Mobile device download which gives you a scalable offline copy as well.

Self drive from North - South - then back to North, Auckland will be my last city before fly home. Planning to join explorer bus whole day, so the cost will be $80 for 2 paxs. Should we use our rental car or explorer bus? In term of cost, rental car per day should be around $55(included 0 access fee) + petrol + parking = almost the same with the bus.

My main concern is not the cost, but the timing. Explorer bus running around 9-5pm only. With own car, we're not rushing so we're more relax for sightseeing. Is't easier to find those places based to explorer bus itinerary if we depend on GPS? Parking issue?

Opinion please and thanks alot.
