4 days and 5 nights in Auckland hotels and places to see

my husband and I will be in Aukland next year in June for 5 nghts and 4 days. Wondering how to make the best use of our time. Is it best to stay in one place and take day trips or to travel around the island? Can you recommend any hostels or budget hotels. Do you need a VISA? we are US citizens. Is it better to rent a car or go with a tour or taxi for the day? Do you need an international driver's license?

If you are wanting to explore outside of Auckland it would be much easier to hire a car, there are rental car agencies in the CBD so it is easy enough just to pick one up for the days you need.

If you are only going to do one thing in Auckland, make sure you get out on the water! there are a large variety of tours and ferries available to different islands.

Great Sights is a company that does basic A-to-B coach tours to Waitomo Caves & Rotorua.

A ferry trip to Waiheke or Rangitoto Islands would be great if the weather permits.

Do bear in mind that June is winter-time, with it getting dark about 5.30pm. We can get rain, wind and cold...so do pack a coat and sweater. If you are driving (especially if you go further afield out of Auckland), do keep an eye on these winter conditions; e.g. the Desert Road [may] get snow! (Long-range weather forecast is fairly accurate). Many people just do not realise we can get these adverse conditions (in NZ!!!) at this time of the year!

If you have a Rental car while you are staying at an inner Auckland Hotel it's highly likely you will need to pay for parking...

Have a nice stay!

There are plenty of things to do in Auckland City so you will not need a car for at least a couple of days if you didn't want to drive there are many tour options to go to Rotorua Taupo and Waitomo Caves note if you want to see a little more it pays to stay overnight at Rotorua. If you do drive ours roads are not straight so it does take a lot longer to get from A to B so from Auckland to Waitomo Caves 2.5 hours there Rotorua 3 hours or more 1 way.

If your trip also includes stops in Australia ... you'll need a visa there.
