Auckland 3 nights 4 days what to see do & car hire good?

Hi all

2 flying into Auckland and we will have 3 nights and 4 days on our hands.

What is there to see and or do that comes highly recommended?

All we've got, assuming it is doable within out timeframe is:

Auckland city eg skytower, viaducts, harbor bridge, queens street?

maybe a full day.

then head out on ferry to waiheke island, if possible via devonport. then on another to rangitoto island.

this might be ...2days worth?

maybe head out to waitakere ranges, waterfall and butterfly creek.

1 days worth?

is this itenary realistically doable?

equally important, is it necessary to hire a car or would public transport etc suffice within the time constraints?

feel free to offer better itenary if possible. Focusing on small budget ie nothing too extravagant eg helicopter rides or bike tour.

do not care about night life.

so far looks like we will be staying in/around skytower eg skycity hotel or rendezvous hotel.

much thanks

Hello and welcome to the forum

For an overview of Auckland have a look at:

www.aucklandnz.com

Spending a day in the city, a day going to Waiheke and another day in the Waitakere Ranges is a good way of spending your time in Auckland.

I am not sure that I would go to both Waiheke and Rangitoto on the same day. Rangitoto is somewhere you would go for walking and to enjoy the natural environment - there is no commercial activity. Waiheke has nice beaches, cafes, restaurants and wineries. You will pass close by to Rangitoto on the way to Waiheke (about 45 minutes from downtown Auckland).

If you stay in the city you would not need a car for the city and to get to Waiheke - there are taxis, buses and you could hire a car on the island for the day. You would need a vehicle to get out to the Waitakere Ranges or you could take a half day or day trip - have a look at.

Be aware that Butterfly Creek is near the airport and not in the Waitakere Ranges.

Hope this helps

If you decide to drive up through the Waitakere Ranges you can also take in the gannet colony at Muriwai (between August and March, when the chicks are on their nests) and the black sand beaches at Karekare (one of the locations for the film The Piano) and Piha. This is a good day trip
