trip to Australia, New zealand, fiji

Hi we have about three weeks in mid January to feb. we would like to

go to sydney (2 days), cairns (3 days), New zealand - north and south for about (10 days) and fiji for the rest of the time which will be about 3-4 days after travelling time. we would like to do sight seeing, cultural things, and snorkeling, not much interested in casinos, or big city life-shopping etc. Any help is highly appreciated. specially for the new zealand..

1. should we do the guided tours or self?

2. what are the things to do in each place?

3 In New zealand we are planning to drive from north to south so any

advise on where to go and where to stay?

4. which island to go to in Fiji?

Hi nrd,

With such a short visit, and preseumably you'll arrive into Auckland from Australia, you will need to narrow down your time spent in NZ to a few places only, unfortunately. Driving the length of the country will take away much of your free time to enjoy the attractions and experiences.

I suggest that you combine a mix of domestic flights with car rental.

Arrive Auckland - 1 night

Drive north to Matakana/Leigh - snorkel Goat Island marine reserve, explore 1 night.

Continue north to Whangarei - Poor Knights marine reserve day cruise - snorkel, kayak. 1 night.

Waipoua Forest & west coast surf beaches - 1 night.

Return to Auckland late afternoon, fly to Queenstown, South Island. Hire rental car, explore Queenstown, Te Anau/Milford Sound - 3 nights.

Aoraki/Mt Cook - 1 night.

Christchurch - 1 night - fly to Fiji.

Welcome to the forum :)

Three weeks is the minimum time to explore both main islands of NZ, it really doesn't allow sufficient time to visit three different countries.

I suggest you reconsider your plans or you will find you are spending all your time sitting in airports.

I suggest you skip Cairns - the main attraction there is the Great Barrier Reef and you can see coral in Fiji.

Instead fly from Sydney into NZ - I suggest Queenstown and make your way north, or you can fly into Auckland and visit the places that Frangipani suggests.

The trip from Syd-Cairns plus time at airport and travel too and from airport..... Have you looked at the Blue mountains just west of Sydney? The great barrier reef is amazing but you are putting a lot of your time into travel.

Some great ideas above for NZ. Just remember we are Islands in the temperate not tropical zone. Kids go back to school in Feb and weather is best Feb - April. Some other destination suggestions are Muriwai beach, Waitomo caves, Coromandel Penninsula and Hot Water beach, Rotorua and Taupo, Whale watching in Kaikoura, Mt Cook, West coast of South Is and the 2 glaciers, Wanaka, Queenstown and Milford Sound.

You wont fit all

I agree with what the others say, I would not bother with Cairns, it is full of British back packers. Also personally I would skip Fiji too, unless you can stay on one of the more expensive islands. Most of the Fiji resorts are tourist traps and food is very expensive because there's nowhere to buy it other than the resort.

I would spend more time in new Zealand, the exchange rate is fantastic for tourists and it does take at least a week to do NZ justice and see enough of the good parts. Don't waste time in Auckland if your stay is only short.

We prefer to snorkel from shore. We have made arrangements to stay near Goat Island Marine Preserve on the North Island in Feb. We've heard that the snorkeling on the Coromandel Penninsula can also be worthwhile.

Does anyone have any specific sites? Also, we hope to snorkel on the South Island. Would appreciate any help. Thanks!

Hi I agree in the time you have make your trip a little more enjoyable and skip Cairns

I would do Fiji it would be a wonderful stop to chill out after a busy sightseeing trip and some long flights. I would stay at the Denarau Island close to the Airport you just drive over the causeway there are some nice hotels there and you will love the warm sunny weather and the beaches and pools will be perfect to chill out beside. I always enjoy Fiji good snorkelling there too.

NZ is awesome so much to see and do. You can fly from Sydney into Auckland, Christchurch or Queenstown. Not sure where you intend to fly into.

If you chose Queenstown take a flight to Milford Sound for the day and enjoy the boat ride then fly back to Queenstown, drive up through Lake Tekapo (go into Mt Cook if it is sunny otherwise overnight in Tekapo (I have friends with a B&B there called Alpine Vista, then carry onto Chch. Or you could go through Wanaka up the coast and across Arthurs Pass back to Chch. Depends how much you like driving what you would like to see and do.

Remember we drive on the left hand side of the road here.

From Chch fly straight up to Auckland and do the Bay of Islands for a few days snorkelling at Goat Island etc. Just pottering around the top of the North Island.

Suggest you choose some areas and focus on enjoying those. Our roads here are dual carriageway no freeways to pick up travel time and to be honest taking on driving both islands is a big ask in the time you have allocated.

Snorkelling in the South Island I would look at Milford Sound, Kaikoura, Abel Tasman (near Nelson). But the sea will be cold.

Think about what Kiwi Tripper and Frangipani have recommended.

If you have any other queries get back to us.
