Best Restaurants in Auckland.

Assuming that you are looking for good value for money, what are the best restaurants people have visited in Auckland and its district. Doesn't matter if it is a cafe by the beach or posh nosh in town.

Tony's Lord Nelson restaurant in Auckland is the best! Just down the street from SkyCity Hotel and Casino. Delicious entrees, appetizers and deserts!

Just completed a 10 day Australian and New Zealand whirlwind tour and by far the best meal we had was in Auckland at The Grove, 55 Albert St., City (entrance off St.Patrick's Square) DELICIOUS and wonderful wines from the region.

It's a bit pricey but we love CinCin- if you decide to go, try and get the window with the bay view!

Head over to Ponsonby for a wide array of restaurants. I think you will find that the standard of restaurants is very high and priced to suit different pockets. Great atmosphere. We ate at the Ruk Thai and it was very good.

I live in Auckland and eat out 5 nights a week, so here are a few of the good ones from experience - mostly posh nosh.

HERNE BAY - There are several goodies. One of my faves is Felicite which is a Simon Gault (a famous NZ chef) and prices are very reasonable for a top hotel. It is quite new, but located in an old brick building on Jervois Road, tell the taxi driver its two doors up from Glengarry's Wine Shop. They do gorgeous fried gorgonzola, gnocchi and other pasta dishes, lots of fresh seafood dishes, as well as meat dishes.

Other restaurants in Herne Bay on Jervois Road are Vinnies which is very good, and Andiamo which is also very good. All on Jervois Road.

PONSONBY - Leonardo's is great on I think its Thursdays and Saturdays when they do opera with the meal, with fab opera singers doing a song/aria along with each course. Obviously its an Italian restaurant, and you will need to book ahead and its at set times to co-incide with the music. On Ponsonby Road, at the Three Lamps End.

Other good places in Ponsonby are SPQR which is very good - lively and lots of gays. Also Chandalier in Ponsonby which is full of plush French red booths and chandaliers, a bit pricey but great in Winter. Both on Ponsonby Road, about half-way down.

PARNELL - If you want Indian go to "Oh Calcutta" in Parnell Road, which is one of the best.

CITY - The most happening restaurant and bar at the moment is Opium, beside the Aotea Square, off Queen Street. Its Asian fusion - mostly Japanese I think.

There's a great old old Mexican cafe upstairs, opposite Sky City which is great for casual Mexican fare and latin dancing and not very expensive. Nearby is Mai Thai which is a pretty good Thai restaurant.

As keen diners we hardly ever venture out of the Ponsonby-Herne Bay- Grey Lynn area. There is no need. Good Ponsonby restaurants have already been mentioned but some more favourites are:

Alhambra Restaurant & bar where you will not find any tourists. It is an old time Ponsonby institution where you can listen to jazz while eating and most people dance. The other night we caught the end of a musician's wake and I have never heard such wonderful music.

Soto Japanese restaurant and beautiful Japanese garden. Seafood set divine.

Next to the recently restored Ponsonby [was a post office] now a Belgian beer bar and restaurant with bowls of mussels.

Dida's tapas bar . We often eat here and just keep ordering tapas until we have had enough for dinner. Squid especially good.

Villa d'Vine specialises in French and Italian meals. Garlic studded lamb to die for. Lovely atmosphere.

Ponsonby is the restaurant area of Auckland.
