We are planning to be in NZ the first part of Jan. 2007. and stay for approx. 10 days. Planning to visit Northland and Bay of Many Islands (Russell) , Rotorua. Do we need to stop at this point or can we include Marlborough Sound, or Nelson? We will be driving ourselves. I really appreciate any advice you have. Don't want to miss something spectacular in our limited time.

Hi jenny, a good time of the year to visit the Bay of Islands! Annual holidays here including school so it will be busy, but don't let that stop you, just make sure everything is booked well in advance. (I like that name too 'cause it does have many islands out there but it is Bay of Islands)

Are you driving? You can probably have 3-4 days up north, 2-3 days in Rotorua and then you could fly from Rotorua to Nelson, hire a car there and cover the top half of the South island. Not too rushed and a good cross section of NZ. What has interested you in Marlborough/Nelson? wineries or nature?

PS- Prepare to miss some spectacular sights, they are everywhere! :)
