If you are lucky enough to be in Northland on 26th January

Put this one on your travel calendar- The North West Mounted Challenge- sort of like a Rodeo, it is a great day out and something that you just don't see a lot of any more, some great mounted games of a stock man nature, and the day is finished off with the spectacular and rough Mongolian Polo game- well worth a visit- we have taken visitors there for over eight years now and every one of them have absolutely loved the day. It is in Te Tio Road, Umawera, near Mangamuka,Northland, starting at 9.00am 26th January, you won't regret the day out entry fee is $5.00 and you can also buy a traditional Hangi meal in the evening, and get the chance to watch it being prepared, an opportunity many visitors to New Zealand never have.

Hi,

Don't mean to ask a "dumb" question, but how long would we need to drive (or other means of transportation) from Auckland to where the NW Mounted Challenge is being held? We don't arrive in Auckland until the 25th of Jan., and may be too exhausted after about 35 hours of travelling, but maybe not! Thanks for your reply.

Hi, not a dumb question at all! It is a 3.5 hour drive,

taking State Highway 1. Nearest accommodation would be either in Horeke at Riverhead Guest House, or in Broadwood. Further away, there is lots of accommodation in Kerikeri. You have chosen a good time of year to visit, as the weather is usually great at that time of year

Thanks so much for the quick reply. It looks like we won't make it up on the 26th as we have a car reserved as of the 29th for four days. Since our flights are going to be MORE than exhausting (northern Germany to Frankfurt to San Francisco to Sydney to Auckland), I'm not sure what kind of condition we will be in when we arrive on the 25th. Thanks again, and maybe...

Wise to have a rest before you start driving on unfamiliar roads- but, if anyone else is looking for a great New Zealand experience, this day is it

We are going to miss it by a few days! So disappointed. We are ranchers from Montana in the US and if you might have any other horse events please let us know. I've not had much luck perusing the internet. We are arriving in the North Island on Feb 3 and then heading to South Island on Feb 11 until the 25th. Thanks

What a shame you will miss it! This event is really unique, as it combines rodeo with a lot of other games, plus a really exciting hill country stockmens race. The professional rodeo circuit may still be going at that time, so I will find teh website and post it on here soon.
