Camping on Norh Island???

Hi, we are now thinking of saving on travel so to have more money to spend on sightseeing. So instead of hiring a campervan we are now considering a car and using camp sites with a tent.

Has anyone travelled this way and found it ok?

We will be in the North Island the 1st to 13th of November, 2006.

What is the average tempersature at that time of year?

Thank You

Kerri

Hi Kerri, it will still be quite nippy at that time of the year- 13-16 degrees on average with a few warmer days thrown in for good measure!

NZ has excellent camping grounds and facilities and as long as you're rugged up warmly when you need to be you will have a great time. Check out these websites for more info;

Cabins at camping grouns can be really quite inexpensive, you then dont have the worry of packing up a wet tent etc.

We have travelled with car & tent a few times in NZ.

Its a good way to do it, and as the last post mentionned, if its a really wet night, or you just fancy having a room & a bed one night, then cabins are often only about $40 for 2 people, so only about $20 more than paying for a tent pitch.

Definitely do bear in mind that it will still be cold esp. at night, so make sure you have fleece, gloves, woolly socks and a decent sleeping bag.

Camping ground cabins are really just a basic hut with normally a bunk with mattress & pillow, --that is the cheap ones that just really give you a dry bed for the night. You use the community showers kitchens etc. Great for younger travellers

There are some that are of a higher standard & may have a table & chairs, basic cooking facilities, shower, etc.. If you go by price you really do get what you pay for.

A Cabin in the Wilderness" is likely to be anything from $100 to $300 NZ per night.

As I said, you get what you pay for

yazmrazk- check this link for a pic of a cabin in one of the Top 10 parks- a lot aren't that bad and as joybell says you can have with a kitchen or not. The main thing is that they don't come with linen (& I believe they don't get serviced every day) you would need sleeping bags etc, they do have pillows, without cases though. They really are a simpler version of a motel unit and can be quite economical.
