what's possible to do in 16 days??

Thanks for everybody's help re NY...Now that that's sorted I need to try and work out my next bit. I'm in Perth from 23rd Dec - 7th Jan but I think from reading the forum pages I've pretty much got that covered. One question is about the possibility of swimming with dolphins - anywhere to go and do that and is it right time of year?

My main questions, however, relate to what to do with the next 16 days before I go to Melbourne for the tennis? I'm going to be on my own during this time and I don't have any transport but I'm open to suggestions as to the best way to get round the different places - fly, drive, combination of both, or take a tour?

I want to go south and am trying to fit in as many places as is practical given my time constraints. I suppose I'm after some help with a possible itinery. There seems to be so many good places to go to, I don't know where to start and which route to take?

I like the outdoors, all different types of scenery, boat trips, wildlife etc but I'm not into the museum/art gallery stuff (cultural heathen!!)

I don't mind taking a tour (it may actually be easier because someone else organises the itinery and transport) but not if it's a case of driving for hours, being allowed out to see somewhere for 30 mins and then having to get back on the bus and moving onto the next place. If anyone knows of any good tour companies I'd be grateful for a website link and for any other info which might help me with making the most of my 16 days.

January is a great time to visit as there is a lot on and the weather will definitely be warm (probably hot). You can definitely swim with wild dolphins at Rockingham just south of Perth - the web page is www.dolphins.com.au

With 16 days I would head down south - the area known as The SouthWest. Two good websites with a lot of info are www.westernaustralia.com and www.holiday-wa.net It is easy to drive and you can just stop as you feel like it , although as it is school holiday time I would book accommodation. Great places to stay are Margaret River - well known for wineries and water sports like surfing, Pemberton - stunning tall tree and Denmark or Albany- fantastic coastal scenery and activities. Drive towards Denmark from Walpole and there is the Treetop walk you can do. The mentioned websites will have general info on these places. But if you search each town by name they usually have their own websites with more detailed information. I don't know about the best bus companies.

Hope you enjoy your visit

Jackitt33, how tennis mad are you? Do you know about the Hopman Cup? It is held in Perth at the Burswood Dome, next to the Burswood Casino and Resort ,just across the Swan River from the city, a short bus ride, or a couple of stops by train. It is a mixed event, each match consists of a women's single, then a men's singles, then a mixed doubles match. There are 8 teams, coming from U.S.A; Australia, Thailand ( I think ) India, and I can't remember the others. It runs from Sat Dec 30th to the final Friday 5th Jan. There are two sessions most days, 11.30am and 5.30 pm. Check it out at Tennis West, Google should find it for you. It is great fun and worth a look.lennyb

You can also do dolphin swimming at Bunbury at the Dophin Interaction Centre. There are also swim tours available. I believe the waters should be warm enough by this time.

Look at South West itinerary... the usual favourites would be Bunbury, Busselton, Margaret River, Pemberton, Albany.

With 16 days... you should have time to rest and relax.

You can check out Perth travel report at: dorischua.blogspot.com

(Search in the archive for Perth reports...)

Enjoy planning!

Jackit33, a little more info on the Hopman Cup. Countries include USA- Venus Williams and Mardy Fish; Russia, Nadia Petrova and Dmitry Tursunov; Aus, Alicia and Mark P; Germany,Martina Muller and Nicholas Kiefer;Spain, Anabel Medina Garrigues and Tommy Robredo; Czech Rep, ucie Safarova and Thomas Berdych; Croatia, Sanja Ancic and Mario Ancic; India Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna.

Some well known names and some new ones. It has been known for the "up and comers" to really do well here and take the form onto the Aus Open.
