Perth in late June, Sunday to Friday

My family of four (all adults) have booked a trip to Perth for 6 days this June. I realize that we will miss the weekend, which is sad. Hence, I need your advice and ideas on how to enjoy this trip. Is it still advisable to visit Freemantle, Subiaco? I have not booked accommodation yet and is still considering car rental. I hope to firm up most of the itinerary within this month. Thanks in advance for all your help!

Mandurah is very accessible - just an hour's drive south of Perth. River, wide estuary, dolphins, seabirds, crabs in season. Beaches, marina, foreshore, shops, cafes, marina...

Very long foreshore - lovely area to stop and watch the very light water traffic and sit with a coffee.

I love visiting markets and browsing shops wherever I travel so here are a couple of ideas for your visit.

In Fremantle:

There’s an outdoor market open Wed – Sat. Number of stalls and quality varies but if you’re spending the day there anyway it’s worth a visit. www.weekendnotes.com/mad-hatter-markets/

The old Myer building now hosts a collection of pop up shops and artist/craft workshops. It’s well worth a visit. It’s called Many6160. Open Wed – Sun. http://many6160.com/

Also this is a very good website for general Fremantle info http://www.fremantlestory.com.au/.

Unlike its counterparts in Melbourne and the Gold Coast,, Perth Harbourtown is fairly small with a limited range of shops. You may also want to visit one of the local shopping centres. I like Garden City. It’s easily reached by bus. The shops are open late (9 pm) on Thursday night. http://www.gardencity.com.au/home

Every year Perth has a Winter Arts Festival which begins in June. The programs isn’t out yet but more info will be available here visitperthcity.com/news/winter-arts-season-c…

All your advice and tips are much appreciated - thank you so much everyone.

Yorkfoodie, thanks for the heads up on proximity of Caversham and Swan Valley; the tip on visiting AQWA when we go to Hillarys is great; will consider your advice of renting a car for more than a day.

Kerry, thanks for listing the attractions at Mandurah - really inclined to visit there now.

70sGrrrl, thanks for the great tip on the Fremantle outdoor market; my wife is very excited about going to GardenCity now especially after realizing that it is ranked #1 amongst the Perth shopping areas.

Good day to you all!

Perth has some beautiful places to see.

Try Bayswater car hire for a great car at a cheaper rate. To do this you will require a taxi from the airport to thier depo in Bayswater.

Go to;

Fremantle for the European influence in Perth. Its old and lovely. Do the Freo jail tour. The Freo markets usually run from Thurs to Sun. Freo is our Port so you will see many big ships. There is a Maritime Museum there too which is a must see. Freo was the Americas Cup dream.

Cohunu Wildlife Park; if you want to cuddle a Koala, have your photo taken with it and see and touch some widlife in a natural surounding. You will never experience this in a zoo...Its a drive out to Byford way but worth the trip.

There is a Reptile park out that way as well.

Caversham Wildlife Park is also nice as it has a vintage car museum too.

Kings park is lovely for the view over the city and if you feel up to a walk through the beautiful gardens and possibly down the side of its hill..the Kokada trail of Kings park. Try the DNA tower too.. There is a lovely playground to visit as well. Kings Park has a lovely restaurant called Frasers and a great coffee shop to take in the superb views.

.

June is not that great for the beaches but you still must see them...We have the best.

Try Cottesloe or Scarborough... although we have many other beautiful and not so tourist orientated beaches along our coast line.

Rottnest Island. This is a lovely spot for a day trip..I think the Rotto Ferry has the cheapest rate to get there..

Penquin Island off Rockingham is also a lovely day trip. see penquins and walk around the island to see seals.. small fee on a ferry.

Perth City; there are many historical buildings in the city centre which you can walk to see, as well as restaurants, bars, malls, shops. The Barrack st jetty is a must see with the Bell Tower as well.

There is several cruises down the River that depart from Barrack st Jetty.

If a cruise down the Swan River interests you....Try a wine tour.... totally amazing.

You can hire a bike and ride around the Perth foreshore. The Art gallery, WA Museum and the Perth Mint are a must see. You can walk to all of these from the city centre or catch a bus.

Subiaco; Home of the Eagles footy ground. If you like bars and restaurants and a little nite life Wed to Sun. There is no longer any markets at subiaco.

The Crown casino is a nice place for a bit of entertainment. It has any restaurants and bars and will be fun on a Thur,Fri,Sat nite. For the 18 years and older. although under 18 can go to the outer restaurants just not allowed inside gambling area.

Accomodation...this depends on your budget and where you would like to be...North of the river, South of the River or City Centre. By the Beach or By the River ????

There are a few short stay accomodation places rather than hotels that I can suggest...save $$$

If you plan on hiring a car, it would be nice to drive to some of the outer suburbs like Toodgay,York, Kalamunda, Mandurah,Bunbury... These will take a day if you start out early driving.

Places like The Swan Valley (40 min drive north/east of city) and Margaret River (3 hr drive sth of city)

are worth the drive...wine tasting, restaurants, choc factory, cheese factory and breweries...alll make an adventurous day out with some beautiful scenery too.

Margaret River is somewhere you may like to stay for 1 nite at least....try a chalet with a wood heater facility ...its a lovely experience.

Being that you are only in Perth during the winter for a short time I have highlighted only some of the wonderfull things that Perth W.A has to offer.
