Wedding in East Fremantle

We will be in Perth in June 2014 for a wedding. Reception is at Red Herring restaurant in East Fremantle. We require 4 nights accommodation and 2 beds (Mother and son), either one room with 2 queen beds, or 2 room apartment with a queen bed in each. Plan on arriving day before the wedding and not sure whether to stay the first 2 nights near the wedding reception venue and the other 2 nights in the city or spend the 4 nights in Freo. Also we don't plan on hiring a car so need to be able to get around using public transport and would like to stay near cafes/restaurants. Have checked out Pier 21 which looks ideal except for not being near restaurants. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Have you looked at Tradewinds? http://www.tradewindshotel.com.au/ You could walk to/from The Red Herring...

Look on stayz.com.au for that area, too. There are apartments on Canning Highway that are short stay.

Pier 21 is a lovely location by the river and I had family stay there - room was great. However, you would need a taxi back from Red Herring as not walking distance after the reception. During the daytime you can walk to the Highway where there are buses and also the train station. You can even walk into Central Fremantle if reasonable fitness. There are some nice little cafes in North Fremantle.

However, as mentioned, the Tradewinds is about a 20 minute walk from venue around the river. You can get bus into Fremantle and there are terrific cafes and restaurants in nearby George St.

I would tend to stay in one spot- either of these two places or somewhere else in Fremantle. The public transport system is good to get into the city and other tourist areas for extra days.

Thank you for your responses. As we are fit and don't mind walking, will probably stay at Pier 21 after all. Don't mind getting the odd taxi either.

Don't forget June is the first month of Winter. With any luck it will be raining. ;-)
