ent a car driving Melbourne to Sydney...

Instead of flying from Melbourne to Sydney we are thinking of renting a car leaving Melbourne AM on Friday and driving with 2 stopovers- Beechworth Friday 28th OCT. (1night) Canberra Saturday 29th Oct.(1night) then on to Sydney early Sunday morning to airport to leave car off for a noon departure.

Is Beechworth worth the stopover or should we try to drive the 8 hours or thereabouts and spend more time in Canberra?

This is all at the end of our month long trip in Australia -travel agent at Quantas Vacations is discouraging the driving. Suggests we fly to Sydney instead. However, if we fly we'll miss Canberra.

How hard is the drive split over 2+ days?

Its an easy drive Mel/Syd. I would head straight for Canberra there is so much to see there. You could easily spend 3-4 days there. You must visit the new Australian Museum, the War Museum and drive around the embassy districts as well as Black Mtn,walk around the shores of Lake Burley Griffin and explore the Botanical Gardens. Also Cockington Green is a must.

Alternatively the coastal drive on the Pacific Hwy is excellent.

You could stop at Merimimbula or one of the coastal towns on the way, it just depends what you want to see.

If you only have 2 days you wont see a lot of Canberra but if the object is just to get to Sydney which a break in between you will be fine.

While you could go Melb-Canberra in one go its a pretty big drive, not all on dual carriage way...Beechworh is a nice country town, with some interesting Gold Rush/bushranger history, old buildings and good restauraunts...such as the Bank or the Green Shed..good b&bs also. Canberra-Syd is an easy 2.5- 3 hour drive, and airport is just off the highway. I live in Canberra and do it often.

Just as in the states you see a lot more if you drive. It depends on your own preferences.Beechworth has interesting history, scenery and the area is studded with wineries and interesting restaurants.

Canberra has its own charm even though it is manufactured-there are great buildings, our national art gallery and museum along with a good science museum etc.

We really enjoy our times when we drive through the states and I am sure you will find it interesting to do your own thing for a couple of days.
