Christmas in Melbourne

Was hoping that someone could please advise what there is to do in Melbourne over Christmas. Am planning to stay from the 22nd-26th of December and was wondering whether there are many restaurants open on Christmas day itself? Would it be better to buy a picnic to take to the beach or park? Are any of the wineries open? And what is public transport like over the holiday period? Thanks.

Public transport runs as normal. Public holidays run to Sunday timetables. Public transport in Melbourne is free on Xmas day.

Shops are open every day except Xmas Day. In fact it's a shopping frenzy, both pre Xmas then the madness of the Boxing Day sales.

Restaurants are open but many do set meals on Xmas Day that you have to book into in advance.

Ethnic restaurants like Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai etcetera are open for normal trading.

Supermarkets are closed Xmas day and Boxing Day but the smaller IGA supermarkets and 7/11s are mostly open.

Picnic on the beach or at a beachside park is a great way to spend xmas day if the weather is nice. If you want a spot with a barbecue, get there early.

Have you got your accommodation sorted out yet? As you can imagine it is a very busy (and can be expensive) time of the year.

Thanks to you all for your suggestions - sounds like there will be loads to do on Christmas day, which is great news. I haven't sorted the accommodation out yet, so had best get on it by the sound of things!
