Honeymoon

We will be staying in Melbourne over the Christmas period (12th-27th) I have looked at all the advice and tours/day trips you have all spoken about which have been a great help.

What other things out of the ordinary would you recommend?

Many thanks

I suppose that question is a bit open ended as any suggestions we make you may already know :) -lol. However, if your looking for some thing unique how about a early morning balloon ride over melbourne

www.hotairballooning.com.au

visitvictoria.com/displayObject.cfm/objectid…

www.balloonovermelbourne.com.au

Given its summer weather will be good to do these.

A tour of the wineries up the Yarra Valley and a lunch at a restaurant up there

…visitvictoria.com/displayObject.cfm/ObjectI…

www.yarravalleywinerytours.com.au

No doubt your would have read about the Colonial Tram restaurant

www.tramrestaurant.com.au

Maybe visit some of our National Trust properties such as Ripponlea mansion in Ripponlea/Elsternwick (a Victorian boom mansion in its our estate- just next door to where i live actually) or Como House in Sth Yarra (another Early Victorian estate)

www.nattrust.com.au

Or a trip down to Werribee Mansion (and nect door is the Melbourne Open Range zoo- part of the Melbourne Zoo)

www.parkweb.vic.gov.au/1park_display.cfm…

There is also a lovely hotel next door called the Mansion Hotel built in part of the orginal catholic seminary (which the mansion became after a house) where you could stay or even have a meal if down there for a day trip.

Go to a drive-in movie ! Do you still have these in London ? We love it, it's like going back in time to some 50's sitcom - young teenagers canoodling, kids in their pajamas, toughs in hotted up cars, fogged up windscreens, pop cor everywhere and always, always chocolate on the pants. There is one in Coburg, about 20-25 minutes from the heart of Melbourne. Great burgers , but ask for a fresh one as they are never hot enough. In the summer people even sit outside of their cars on folding chairs. Of course, you will need a car... speaking of chocolate, there is a chocolate lovers walking tour around Melbourne which throws in a little bit of Melbourne History as well.

St Kilda esplanade market; it's a bit crappy but there are nice cake and coffee shops in the area and an amusement park(Luna Park, which is also a bit crappy !). Go see a live band at a Pub somewhere for a bit of youth culture. Walk down Lygon St for Little Italy, or Brunswick St in Fitzroy for alternative culture. Eat out at a top restaurant in whatever style of cuisine you like. Check out where "Neighbours" is filmed. Take a drive up into the hills and eat at a kitsch smorgasboard place there like the cuckoo or have a great pie at the specialist pie place in Olinda. If you can't afford the balloon ride, go to the Rialto lookout for the best view in Melbourne. See http://webcam.omni.net.au/ ( Doh ! currently not working, but it's great when it does. Panoramic view of Melbourne from about 30 stories up.

Dont forget to do The Great Ocean Road its fab and one of the best drives in the world. Tours are available www.aussiesights.com.au

You can also do Phillip Island home to the penguins and the Yarra Valley Wineries. Mornington Peninsula region is amazing with lovely beaches, quaint townships and boutique wineries. The Dandenong Ranges is also interesting and well worth a visit. Not to forget the Grampians National Park and Ballarat the getaway to the Goldfields.

You could just go on........but the best thing about Melbourne is the shopping and restaurants.

have fun!!!

If you are going to hire a car one of the best places to go is the restaurant on top of Mt. Dandenong. It's not to expensive, and the vieww is fantastic.

Do The Ultimate Penguin Tour on Phillip Island...

See www.pemguins.org.au for details on the penguin parade and viewing options.

Phillip Island is 90 mins drive from Melbounre. If you want to say overnight, then see www.visitphillipisland.com - the tourism association website with accommodation options as well as info on the island etc.

My recommendations depend a bit on whether you have booked accom for your whole stay. All could be done in a day but staying overnight or a couple of nights is much more satisfying.

1. Wilsons Promontory. Fantastic camping and great bush/ocean walks. 3 hours from Melb.

2. Echuca. Up on the Murray River and sure to be nice and warm that time of year. Great old steamboats and wharves. 2 1/2 hours from Melb.

3. Bright. Beautiful mountain town. At the bottom of Falls Creek, Mt Hotham and Mt. Buffalo. 3 1/2 hours from Melb.

4. Grampians and Ballarat. Hills, walks, wineries and great bushland. Sovereign Hill is also located at Ballarat. 2 hours from Melb.

5. Marysville. Fantastic bush area, walks, waterfalls and trout farms. 2 hours from Melbourne.

Seeing as you will be in Melbourne for Xmas, you could always head to Carols By Candlelight at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl. It's held on Xmas Eve and is a great night - if you are into that sort of thing. ;-)

A trip up to the Yarra Valley,

Stay a night at the Mt Rael Retreat, very romantic and the best restuarant in the Yarra Valley and it's close to all the winerys.

Have a look at www.zarliving.com.au

Enjoy
