Supermarkets with fresh fruits

Hi!

Would like to seek advice- Which are the supermarkets selling fresh fruits at reasonable price near to Somerset on Elizabeth?

What are the usual opening hours for supermarkets in Melbourne?

Queen Victoria Market is the best and cheapest in the city for fresh food.

Agree with Eva. The QVM is by far your best option. From the Somerset, turn right and walk along Elizabeth St for about 10 minutes. Alternatively, there is a Coles supermarket just around the corner from the Somerset in Lonsdale St. It is located on the ground floor of the Melbourne Central shopping center.

All supermarkets sell fresh produce and generally open from 8am to 8pm. Many will open longer, such as the Safeway in the QV Building in Swanston Street that stays open till middnight.

Safeway? Hasn't it been Woolworths for a few years now?

Like bathers vs cossies, canteloupe vs rock melon, potato cakes vs potato scallops, Safeway always gives a Victorian away 😉

Hi all,

Thanks for the info. I just saw the word cautelope today. And I was wondering- isn't that a rock melon?

Couldn't go to QVM as it closes early on the day. any other nearby option?

Yes it is, but we only use cantaloupe to describe the orange rock melon, not the green one.

As previously advised the closest supermarket to you is the Coles in Melbourne Central which is in the basement, right next to Melbourne Central Station. You can enter it from Latrobe, Little Lonsdale, Swanston or Elizabeth Street.

Next is the Woolworths in the Queen Victoria Building, which is also in the basement and which stays open till midnight. You can enter it from Swanston Street (look for the Big W sign, go down the escalator and walk through Big W), Lonsdale Street, Russell Street or Little Lonsdale Street.

I call the green melon a honeydew melon. Is that a Victorian or NSW name?

There's also an Aldi supermarket near the corner of Swanston St. and Franklin St.
