October 2013 Melbourne must do's

Hi All, We are travelling down to Melbourne next October between 23rd and 26th. Will be arriving in a motorhome with my wife and 2 boys (10 & 12).

Coming down from Adelaide and looking to have a day or 2 of motorhome free activities. Any suggestions as to what is going on during this period?

Many thanks

There's nothing in particular on, ie no major sporting events or festivals. Still, there's plenty to see and do otherwise depending on your interests.

Science Works is pretty cool which is just over West Gate Bridge, most kids and parents like that. The Melbourne Aquarium and Melbourne Zoo are also quite fun. There is a night tour at Old Melbourne Goal which is really awesome. Kids seem to love Luna Park in St Kilda if you have a bit more money to spend.

Actually, Melbourne is busy and exciting in October with the Spring Racing Festival. In the first week it is also still school holidays so, if you're there then, expect some to the the previously recommended places to be busy. If you would like to take a trip both Sovereign Hill (Ballarat) and Healesville Sanctuary are great for kids. You might also like to do the trip to Phillip Island to see the nightly Penguin Parade.

That is except for the rather major Melbourne Festival which is on from 11-27 October.

Full programme comes out in August - http://www.melbournefestival.com.au/index.php

Not sure how much of Australia you've seen and where you're going after Melbourne. There's the National Sports Museum (http://www.nsm.org.au/) at the Melbourne Cricket Ground or a river cruise along the Yarra from Southbank. If you're leaving Victoria & not touring some more then the reply would be different.
