Can't find rental car to take on Sorrento ferry.

We are planning a trip from Sorrento to Queenscliff by the Searoad ferry, which offers a better experience and beats driving the long way there. However, we can't seem to fins any car hire companies that actually allows it. I have checked Hertz and Avis, and called up Budget and Europcar, and all do not allow it.

Wondering if anyone has this same issue, and which car company does allow it? Or we could just taje the risk and keep our fingers and toes crossed that our car doesn't fall off the ferry.

Thanks in advance!

If something does happen to your car on the ferry you will not be covered. It could be an expensive accident.

Car rental companies often have spotters who get fees for spotting car hire users doing things they shouldnt!

Thanks for the tip hamiriver! Just curious, if it is not a marked rental car, how do they recognise it?

Most rental cars have the name of the company as stickers on the rear window IME...

You car doesn't have to fall off the ferry for you to find yourself in trouble. If another car scrapes you as you are getting on or off the ferry you have to report the damage - no matter how slight - and the damage occurred on the ferry the insurance is void.

I have heard that Thrfty doesn't specify that it's not allowed.

Vroomvroomvroom has a useful website for Terms&Conditions of all the major renters. The Ts&Cs are linked to their FAQs: http://www.vroomvroomvroom.com.au/

There are several companies that permit vehicles on ferries. Some cover them for insurance unless the ferry sinks; others have no exclusion for ferries. (Thrifty is not one of them.)

Thanks all. Just checked with all the companies, apparently all does not allow it. Have to find another route now, problem is that we've booked all our accommodation. Bugger!

That isn't correct, but driving around the bay is quicker anyway. :)

East Coast rentals lets you take their cars on the ferry but all insurances are void - I emailed to double check that we could take the car on it. That is one of the reasons we're not now doing that trip.

Thanks guys. We have decided t go with East Coast car rentals as mentioned by ne_quine, they allow the car on the ferry, but insurances are voided. They were really friendly and sincere on the phone as well, and we did talk to 3 different people. :D
