Where to Stay in Melbourne - some place with good gym and...

Anyone have any recommendations for nice hotels (4 or 5 stars) in Melbourne that have nice health club/gym and lap pool? I was looking at the Langham and it looks nice, but pool seems a little small for actually swimming laps. Crown Towers looks nice, but too expensive. Any other suggestions?

Langham Poll is too shallow for laps... i think it is also a bit short.

Whilst not a hotel (daily serviced apartments) the Gym and Pool at Quay West Suites are pretty good. It's located just in front of the langham. Pool is about 20m long, gym is not huge but everything worked and was of good quality.

There's a review of our stay.

This thread has info for public pools which are good for lap swimming. My favourite would be Albert park (venue for World masters Games swimming)

Hi Have you looked at the second Crown hotel The Crown Promenade. Much more reasonably than the Crown Towers but still a great location and gets good TA reviews. Has a 25 meter lap pool and a fully equiped gym. Our friends have stayed there and loved it. www.crownpromenade.com.au

Well bottomline is your not going to get a great pool and gym and get cheap rates!. Motels and backpackers and cheap hotels do not have facilties like that attached that is usually why you are paying higher rates.

Best bet is the Grand Hyatt which has a gym and pool attached - it is run as an independant facility so their the gym is a full size proper place - not just an add on with a few weight machines. I think entry to the gym however maybe pay for standard rooms but included for Club Level rooms - better to email the hotel to check. Pool is okay but not huge (and also has a sauna/steam room) and there are no hotels pools other than the Crown Towers that I would surmise as being large (as hotel pools are wont to be places of pleasure- not usually lap swimming).

Alternative is to stay at a cheaper hotel and maybe go out for your fitness injection and pay on a casual basis. For pools there is the City Baths (city government run) at the top of Swanston st:

or the Melbourne Sports & Aquatic centre - home of the 2006 Commonwealth games. However, that is in Albert Park just outside the CBD and would require a tram if staying in the CBD but its facilities are world class:

Thanks to everyone for your helpful replies. I think we will probably stay at the Langham or Park Hyatt as they seem to have what we are looking for.

Question: Does anyone have any info on the Grand Hotel Sofitel? I'm just not sure about the location, but it looks like a pretty nice hotel.

Thanks!

The Sofitel is a hotel with great views but no pool. It's gym is down in the basement and is just ok. I don't stay in the hotels in town that often but when I do, I like good gym and swimming facilities. The best I have found is Crown, really enjoyed the sporting facilities there. Crown, Langham and Quay West are all situated on the banks of the Yarra River, looking back across to the city. The Sofitel is at the top end of Collins St and close to theatre, shops, Parliament, MCG and some great gardens.

The Sofitel and the Grand Hotel by Sofitel are two different hotels. The Grand Hotel is in the old Vicrail building on Spencer streets on the corner of Flinders st. A short walk to the casino, at the western end of the CBD, on the city circle free tramline and next door to Southern Cross (formerly Spencer st) station. It is a converted 19th century building with a combinatin of studio rooms and serviced apartments. It does have a indoor swimming pool but not stayed there (only eaten) so cant vouch for size.

The other Sofitel is n the eastern edge of the CBD and is in a high rise and has no pool but i believe may have a gym complex in the basement..

I have stayed at the Grand Hotel by Sofital in a one bedroom apartment which had a fully equipped kitchen, dining area, lounge and an upstairs bedroom and bathroom. It was very spacious.

The cooridors are a wonder to behold as wide as can be, ornate and long. There is a restaurant, library and bar. It has an indoor heated pool, spa and sauna. The building is over 100 years old. 5 Star hotel.

The surrounds are not great as it has railway viadcuct on two sides (noise was not a problem inside the hotel) and practically no outside grounds. Car parking is offsite and around $25.00 per day.

The hotel is close to Telstra stadium if you want to see an aussie football match. It is at the western end of the City but there is a free city circle tram at the door. It is also close to Spencer St railway station which provides access to the city loop underground and metro, interstate and country railways. Crown Casino, Southbank. theYarra River, city centre etc are short walks away.
