SOLO female Travelling to Melbourne CBD June 2013

So I've decided to take a trip to Melbourne this June for 1 week. As I'm going to be alone I'm unsure what hotels will be in well populated, lit up areas. I am planning to attend at least one Friday night footy match (Etihad stadium). Last June I stayed 1night (Saturday) at vibe savoy... I have made a booking to return to the place but I do remember the area being deserted at the time. They Are charging me $1600 also which might be out of my budget. Could anyone please give me some recommendations?

Thanks :-)

Clare

Ohh and any backpacker hostels are definitely out of the question.

We stayed at the Batman's Hill (www.batmanshill.com.au) which is right opposite Southern Cross Station (very handy for Etihad Stadium!). There were tram stops right at the front door which meant you could travel all over Melbourne very easily.

Hotel itself was pleasant enough - nothing outstanding but was clean and beds okay to sleep in.

I stayed at Punt Hill Little Bourke apartments for a 5 night trip to Melbourne (solo female). Was very happy with the location and general area, especially being in China town. A bit noisy on Fri and Sat nights, but well lit and lots of people around.

Wrong end of town for Etihad though ... depends on what else you plan to do

safe travels :-)

I have stayed several times at Harbourview apartments on La Trobe street. This is walking instance to Etihad stadium and docklands. It is also right on the tram line ( free city tram and others) .it is also walking distance from Spencer Street Station where the airport bus operates from. It's a cheap cab ride too from the casino at night. It's on main roads so a safe walking route.

The problem with anything near the Docklands area is that it can be very quiet. It is like a ghost town so I would recommend that you find a hotel in the CBD.

Getting to the footy is easy from the CBD and of course, it will be packed.

You could opt for a serviced apartment at about $200 a night (maybe less as I just checked their rack rates on their website) - Quest Southbank I've stayed with plenty of times. It's in the thick of the entertainment precinct down on "the other side" of the river. It wouldn't be hard to get to Etihad (not walk, but certainly tram) from there or an easy walk to the MCG if it's a Friday Night MCG blockbuster. And you've got plenty of access to the heart of the CBD, St Kilda and South Melbourne.

Given that you're travelling alone, I'd suggest getting a private room at a backpackers.... Best way to meet other people who are also travelling or in Melbourne alone.

However if you really need somewhere classier or finer, then check wotif.com or lastminute.com.au closer to the date. You can always do a search now for accom in the next week just to get a rough idea of the sort of accom you get for your money. There aren't any big events in Melb in June so you should be fine to get somewhere.

Agree with Peter re: Docklands, I wouldn't stay there, it's often very quiet. Try to be based in the cbd. Quest that Justin mentioned is just around the corner from myself and have heard good things, also quite central, short walk everywhere.

If you're not familiar with the city, when you find the address of somewhere you're happy with (if they dont provide a map) type it into whereis.com
