Fun Pub - Live Music??

Hi Tripadvisors,

I'm hoping someone can help... I'm headed to Melbourne in April with a girlfriend, and I'm looking for some fun places for a night out.

I know Melbourne is great for cozy little laneway bars and classy little spots for a couple of cocktails... we'll no doubt explore a good few of those. What I'm hoping to find though, is a great fun rowdy kind of place with a bit of live music (cheesy cover bands perfectly fine) and a good fun crowd. We're in our mid-late 20's, so we're not after anywhere too full of youngies. Somewhere in the CBD would be preferred, but happy to go a bit further if needs be

Any suggestions??

Melbourne is the right city if you are looking for a night out to see Live Music, even on Monday's there is always something on. When you arrive see if you can pick up a Beat (http://www.beat.com.au/) or INpress Magazine from the nearest licensed venue (they usually have them and they are free) these will give you the best overview for all different tastes.

Both here and when travelling I also use Last.fm to keep an eye on gigs for my current or planned location as it tends to suggest things based on what I like, check out http://www.last.fm/events/+place/Australia/Melbourne?showAll=1&sort=date&startdate=2013-04-01. More local acts will show up closer to your travel date, this far out you will only see the big things that are on.

My favorites would have to be The Old Bar (http://theoldbar.com.au/) and The Tote (http://thetotehotel.com/) which are in the Fitzroy/Collingwood area just north east of the CBD. Lots of venues also do good food, like The Workers Club (http://theworkersclub.com.au/) and the Northcote Social Club (http://northcotesocialclub.com/) so you can have a meal as well as enjoy the music afterwards. Most acts tend to charge a door charge but early in the week you can find a few things on for free.

Thanks a lot Kingsley, that's super helpful. Will most absolutely check out your suggestions.

Do any of the Irish/British pubs around town have fun, slightly dodgy cover bands on a weekend? We're after somewhere for a bit of good rowdy fun... somewhere you can have a few pints and sing along like a fool :)

Kingsleys suggestions are fantastic, I second the northcote social club if you are that side of the city. To add one on the other side of the city I would throw in the esplanade hotel in st kilda, known as "The Espy"... Very casual pub with great live music, however not usually cover bands. It's also in a great spot overlooking the beach. Check out their website to see if the bands playing are your sort of thing. Enjoy Melbs!
