best route to ferry terminal by motorhome???

Can anyone please suggest the best route[ avoiding toll roads ]to the ferry terminal in Melbourne .... we are driving a motorhome.....we would be approaching from Phillip Island direction for a 9am sailing on a Sunday.

Obviously the gps wont show a suitable route as the motorhome is over 3 metres high and we have been told to avoid the toll roads due to our height. Thanking anyone for their assistance.

[ The only route we can find is coming in on the Hume Highway from the north.]

I would say that you shouldn't have too much trouble due to height, since plenty of trucks use toll roads and many of them exceed 3m in height. If you are still concerned, you could hop off the freeway onto Wellington rd and continue towards the City, then up Brighton rd, and then find your way to Station Pier.

Check out this link

…vic.gov.au/Home/…HeightClearanceOnRoads.htm

Every bridge in Melbourne is listed there and you will see of there are any on your way that won't let you through.

Actually, there are some bridges around South Melbourne you need to avoid, Montague St & City Rd are 2 I have seen trucks stuck under & motor homes demolished.

A lot of trucks use Beach Road & the Esplanade, so perhaps look at cutting across from the Sth Gippsland Hwy to Nepean Hwy or South Rd.

The most convenient would be using the Monash all the way to Todd Road, & then following the truck route to Station Pier. You will have to pay tolls, but it's the most direct.

If you continue up North rd and turn into St. Kilda st. you will encounter one bridge on North rd. which should let you through, it has height restriction of 4.4 m. Further on the Esplanade there is no more bridges all the way to terminal.

The easiest route is using tollways, so you will need to take time and effort to use the freeway and then probably Wellington/North Road as Antipod says.

There are too many very low railway bridges between Port Melbourne and the city, although the (poorly) signposted routes now go around them, so don't go into the city.

The easiest, bridge-free route is as Antipod describes, to head for the bay along Wellington and North roads, then turn right at the end of North road and drive past St Kilda all the way round the edge of the bay to Station Pier. If the bridge on North road is too low for you (unlikely), the street parallel and immediately south of North Road at Brighton (Bay Street) has a level crossing rather than an underpass.

Can't miss the big red boat at Station Pier!

Height isn't an issue on the toll roads, it's a major truck route. If you aren't worried about paying tolls take the Monash and West Gate freeways to Todd Road and use your GPS from there. By far the simplest route.

Re the exit off the Westgate freeway to Todd Road: it's clearly marked (as you would expect) but there's also a service centre that (at least to my mind) makes the geography in that part of the world fairly complicated! But you'll be fine if you watch out for and follow the signs.
