Nightlife - bars/clubs in Melbourne

What are the best places to hang out in the evenings/nights in Melbourne, ie: good pubs, wine bars and nightclubs? I'll be visiting for 5 days with a friend in Oct and we definately want to experience some decent nightlife :)

Hi ukdiva,

I would certainly post this on the melbourne forum..

We stayed in melb a few months ago..took two 21 years old down..they had a ball..they went to the casino for nightclubbing..there are two big dance venues on the top floor..the casino is located in southbank. The other place they loved was fitzroy street in brunswick..great funky bars..dotted up and down the street.

The bars listed in the link in my post above are well known Melbourne clubs and if you follow the walking tour they advise you will get to experience quite a variety in a relatively small area.

Ukdiva, what type of age group are you looking at when you go out....?? If you want to get out where there are no teenyboppers, we often get to the two big jazz clubs in town....Manchester Lane, just off Flinders Lane, near Swanston St...and Bennetts Lane, at the top end of the city, off Little Lonsdale, between Exhibition and Springs Sts. For a bit of louder music, the Elephant and Wheelbarrow cnr of Exhibition and Bourke Sts.

October is the start of the Spring Racing Carnival and party time in Melbourne will really increase leading up to the Melbourne Cup (first Tues in November). It is a big dress up time in town as the girls really frock up for the big race meetings, if you are in town for any of them it would be worth going.

Willnino - Just seen your reply! Not sure whether we will be in town during the lead up to the racing, we are only there 1st - 6th October. We would like to go out somewhere that isn't full of teenys, we are late 20s, early 30s, we like to party but don't want anywhere too rowdy! *lol* But equally don't want anywhere too pretentious (we have enough of that in London! *lol*) So, ideally our requirements are:

Trendy, but not painfully so

Not full of teenys

Good music (if it's a nightclub, ie: r&b, pop, soul)

Good company

Hopefully that isn't too much to ask! *lol*

ukdiva you are here mid week, so night life may be a little quiet over the Monday to Wed time frames. The jazz clubs I mentioned are open every night and if you are ok on the Sunday the 1st (not sure where you are arriving from) you can find lots of good places on the Sunday nights. Check the Sunday papers out on your arrival for venues. Crown always has nightclubs on the go, as well as the casino and the Irish pub in Southgate always gets great reviews. Maybe on the Thurs night head down to Fitzroy St. StKilda, there are a number of different options down there, including plenty of live music. Also Glenferrie Rd in Hawthorn has a couple of excellent pubs, the Gee Bung Polo club is a hotel that has a great "older" crowd.

One little gem for around 6pm on the Sunday night is the Rainbow Hotel in Fitzroy, not far off Brunswick St, packed in but a good atmosphere and no real youngies. For a km or so down Brunswick St, Fitzroy there are a number of real funky type places that you should enjoy as well. Good luck. Will

A good base to start your night is Transport opposite Flinders St station, right in the heart of the city. It surrounded by a few groovy restaurants (try chocolate buddha for some quick and tasty japanese) The atmosphere is great and the crowd varies from friday night after work drinks to crowds on there way out for a big night in town.

If you want to hit the dancefloors till the early hours try heading down chapel st in Toorak and try some of the bars and clubs in the area. Most of Melbournes nightlife is close to the cbd and easily accessed by trams and trains or a cheap taxi fare.

For some eclectic bars and clubs head down Brunswick Street, Fitzroy for a mix of pubs and groovy bars and lounges that come alive after dark.

A day at the Caulfield races in October is a great day out and you never know who you will run into and where the night will take you...
