Park the car and take the train in to NY City to see a Broadway Show - even teens will take home memories of this - there are always family friendly (non opera-snooze!) shows playing. Food galore in NY City, shopping FAO Schwarts even for adults!

Go shopping.New jersey is tax free for clothing and there are some good oulet malls.Try www.outletbound.com

and search new jersey to see what is available.

Otherwise visit philadelphia for its history and great food if you are not into shopping.

This is a wonderful resource for things to do with kids in NJ (also surrounding NYC and Phily). www.kidsguide.com/

There's loads to do in NJ even if you avoid NYC. September is a lovely time. Still warm at the beach with reduced rates. You can visit historical sites where often they have battle reenactments on weekends. There are fun amusement parks, beautiful botanical gardens, nice towns to stroll (Princeton, Summit), ethnic neighborhoods (Hoboken is fun with great restaurants and across the Hudson from NYC), etc.

I agree! Head right to NYC or Philly for a real taste of the US. I would normally recocmend that you avoid the tourist sites as they can be packed however by Sept. kids are back in school and the crouds thin out.
