best area to stay

where would be the best area to stay for 5 days ,

we are arriving in middle of august and doing the usual

touristy things by day ,trips out etc, but in the evenings we want to be in a area with restaurants and bars but not into casinos.

we do not know which area to book a hotel .

any help would be welcome.

Without a doubt the Southbank area is the best area to stay. Many different restaurants and everything within walking distance. A choice of hotels with the Travelodge ( very convenient and not expensive) The Langham ( one of Melbourne's best) Pacific International on City Road, Quay West Suites and various apartment options. Southbank is on the river, has great views of the city, is in the Arts Centre area and is close to the Botanic Gardens. The CBD and shops are just across the bridge, but Southbank offers many shops as well. Google any of the above or click on Melbourne Hotels. Other suggestions would be the Hatton Hotel in South Yarra or the Lindrum, but neither are as convenient to restaurants as Southbank

i agree that Southbank is best...but generally anything in that same vicinity is just as good...say, within 5 blocks north of there and in either direction.
