where to stay

Been reading through this forum and still am confused. my husband and I will be in melbourne for about 3 nights in august. we have never been there before and not sure where to stay. we would like a nice hotel around $200 a night in the middle of town where we can just walk to a nice resturant or a nice cup of coffee, walking distance to shops and maybe on a train or tram line so we could do a bit of site seeing, which brings me to another question, what should we see while there? we will not have a car as we are flying in.

Well hopefully you will enjoy your stay irrespective of the reviews.

I personally like the location...its not on the Yarra and you probably wont have a view (unless its of a building) but its in Lt Collins which is a cute little street leads down to the City Square (Brunetti have an outlet there for coffe & cake), close to trams in all directions, Collins street for haute couture (window?) shopping...and a couple of minutes walk from the Yarra and Southbank precinct etc Its quite central to most things and in that respect well located.

Within one block radius you've got a heap of options for food/coffee etc so if you want any info just give an "oi!"...Im sure other will help you out with their fave spots to snack, too!

btw here's my link to the free tourist bus & tram services.
