Stop over in Melbourne... what to do?

We have basically a day and a half in Melbourne at the end of a trip. (Arrive at night, have the full next day, and fly out mid afternoon the following day.)

I'm torn.. Do we head up to Ballarat? Do the Ocean Rd? Just wander the city? Not interested in shopping. We like nature, like history, and would be interested in things that are uniquely Australian.

You can join a tour to do the Great Ocean Road.

Choice of tour operators are Go West ( https://www.gowest.com.au ), ATWAD ( http://www.atwad.com.au ) - small group, AAT Kings ( https://www.aatkings.com ) - big group, Around and About ( http://www.aroundandabout.com.au ) - small group.

What was it that prompted you to go to Melbourne, if you have so little time and no plans to spend time there?

Will you have previously visited a zoo or wildlife park? If not, a day trip to Healesville Sanctuary would be really good.

What time at night are you arriving? If late, it may be worth staying at a hotel near the airport and go into the city by Skybus, Uber or taxi, if needed. It's a good idea by Kevin in suggesting some day tours. You could also see wild kangaroos at Living Legends, which is only 5 kms from the airport.

We are flying out of Melbourne for our return. (Utilizing frequent flyer miles and that was the best route.)

We land at 10:30 am and leave late the next afternoon.

Our main trip is 2 weeks in NZ, but realizing that we may never have the opportunity to fly halfway around the world again, a few days in Australia is better than never getting there at all. We're flying from Auckland to Cairns for a few days, then down to Melbourne and out.

In your first post you say you arrive in Melbourne at night. I assume you arrive at 10.30pm, not am? If that is correct, it may be worth staying at an airport hotel.

I misspoke. We arrive at 10:30 am, and leave the following day mid-afternoon.

Thinking of doing the Ocean Rd that afternoon/evening, and spending the morning in the city for a few hours before we head to the airport.

Great Ocean Road would be physically impossible in that time frame.

At is speediest it’s a full day tour starting 7am and getting back at 9pm. And that’s on a coach with a professional driver.

At its best it’s a 3-4 day self drive.

In your time frame - heading into the CBD on Skybus and looking around within the free tram zone would be feasible.

A full loop of the GOR from Melbourne is in excess of 600k about 10 hours + non stop driving and cannot be safely done in a day. The tours of the GOR generally leave Melbourne very early in the morning and return about 8pm at night these tours normally take 13 - 14 hours. From what you have posted you simply don’t have time to do anything else other than chilli out and look around Melbourne.
