Great Ocean Road/Grampians

Hi,

Looking to do a Great Ocean Road and environs trip in December. Below is our suggested itinerary. Any suggestions for alternatives, or other comments would be welcome. The dates we leave Melbourne (17 Dec)and the date we need to be back in Melbourne (24 Dec) are fixed. We would be using a hire car and staying in hotels along the way. Our interests are walking, photography and wildlife.

17th Land Tullamarine Airport, drive to Torquay-Overnight in Torquay

18 Drive to Port Campbell-stay 2 nights in Port Campbell

20 Drive to Port Fairy-stay 1 night in Port Fairy.

21 Drive to Halls Gap-stay 2 nights in Halls Gap

23 Drive to Ballarat-stay 1 night in Halls Gap

24 Return to Melbourne.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

John

Don't hire a vehicle straight after arriving on a long haul flight it's just plain dangerous. Catch a Gull bus to Geelong and spend the night there. All the major hire car companies are well represented and you won't have any problems hiring a vehicle from that city.

Look at one night Apollo Bay one night Port Campbell or Warrnambool/Port Fairy two nights Halls Gap and one night Ballarat.

It gets really busy along the GOR at that time of the year and I would want to be booking accommodation ASAP.

Www.gull.com.au for the Gull bus.

+1 for Famrick. Don't drive on the day you arrive.

17th - Take the Gull bus to Geelong, overnight Geelong.

18th - pick up a hire car in Geelong, o/n Apollo Bay.

19th - o/n Port Campbell.

20th - o/n Port Fairy (or spend these 2 nights in Warrnambool which is more or less mid-way between the two).

21st and 22nd - o/n Halls Gap.

23rd - o/n Ballarat.

@Loki, that should be the motto of the Melbourne/GOR forums!

"Stay alive - don't drive on the day you arrive!"

But seriously, they're totally right. Never ever ever get behind the wheel straight off a long-haul flight, even in the same time zone. It's gonna end badly for someone. Either stay that first night in Melbourne and see a bit of the city, or follow Famrick's suggestion and take public transport to Geelong for the first night. Famrick and Loki have a pretty good itinerary for the rest of your trip.

Agree with previous posters- I would avoid back tracking where you can. For example, rather than driving from Ballarat back to Halls Gap and then to Melbourne through Ballarat again the next day, just drive from Halls Gap to Ballarat, stay the night in Ballarat and then continue on to Melbourne.
