GOR trip -> Tower Hill Reserve or Colac

Hi ppl,

My friends and I will be going on a GOR trip in Nov. As we don't have enough time, we have to choose between Tower Hill Reserve or Colac. Tower Hill is so far out, is it worth it? Will there be a lot of walking in Tower Hill? We have a small kid with us.

Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

How many days for GOR (you really need 2 nights on the road) ?

Yes, how many nights? Colac is just a coffee break stop.

I agree with the comments you need two nights on the road if doing a GOR loop from Melbourne Colac is just a coffee break. You would need to spend at least 2 or 3 hours there to fully experience it.

Driving directly to Tower Hill from Melbourne is about an 8 hour return trip and it would be a bad idea to attempt this in a day and in fact would be dangerous.

If you wanted something much closer to Melbourne look at visiting Serendip sanctuary at Lara followed by a visit to the You Yangs both are very underrated IMO and well worth a visit.

We have decided to extend our visit to a 2 night stay.

So we most likely can do a coffee break stop in Colac.

(Original plan was either to turn back around Port Campbell via Colac or to proceed to Tower Hill)

New more leisurely plan will be :

Depart early in the morning from Melbourne city by car.

Stop at Kennett River for lunch and koala viewing.

Various stops along the way till 12 apostles (princetown)

We have booked a 2 nights stay in princetown.

Depart for Tower Hill on 2nd day (with stops along the way)

Come back to princetown for the nite.

Depart for Melbourne city on 3rd day passing Colac.

Plan ok? Or are we spending too much time in GOR?

Thanks.!

How well rested will you be for the challenging drive?

>>Or are we spending too much time in GOR?<<

No. Two nights is the minimum and you could spend longer. Melbourne to Princetown on the first day is too far and too rushed.

Melbourne to Princetown is far too much in a day and on day two involves backtracking which dosen't make sense effectively you are wasting time with unnecessary travel by travelling to Tower Hill and then returning to Princetown for the night.

You would have been far better to have booked accommodation at Apollo Bay for the first night followed by the second at Warrnambool/PortFairy which would have been the logical thing to do. Tower Hill is located halfway between Warrnambool and Port Fairy.

+1 for Famrick #6.

I recently spent a night at Princetown following 3 nights in Apollo Bay. It took me about 3.5 hours to get from AB to Princetown, a further 15 minutes to the 12A, then backtracking to Princetown. The next day I went to Loch Ard Gorge and continued on to Bay of Islands, which is certainly worth seeing. That's about an hour from Princetown. Tower Hill is a further 45 mins from BoI. That's about 2 hours backtracking to reach Princetown again.

You can manage with 1 night in Princetown if you spend your first night in Lorne or Apollo Bay.

And as Mac has asked, are you flying in to Melbourne and heading straight for the GOR??

Thanks for all the feedback.

Yea. I guess spending 2 nights in one place will cause us to waste time in backtracking.

Reason being the place we booked our accommodation had a min 2 nights booking and it looks quite nice. Was hoping to spend some time in the place (bbq, explore the place a bit)

I picked Princetown because it had a few attractions that looked interesting to me.

eg. Great Ocean Road Wildlife Park and etc...

As advised, I think I will break up the 2 nights. (1 in apollo bay and the other in princetown)

We will be spending a total of 10 days in Melbourne. GOR is just part of the trip. We will be going to Ballarat (Wildlife Park n Sovereign Hill) and maybe Philip Island but I am rethinking that. I hope St Kilda's penguin will reopen in Nov (heard its closed now) so we can see the penguins there instead.

Thanks again.

This is getting complicated and now you mention Ballarat as well, not sure if that's on the way back or what? Phillip Island and St Kilda are vastly different experiences and there are penguins at the aquarium too so I guess it depends on what sort of experience you are expecting?

Perhaps you could post your draft daily itinerary so we can see exactly what you're trying to do and help you put it together in a way that works well. Oh and ow many of you are there and how young is the child, as that can affect what suits you too?

When are you intending to go to Ballarat?

IMHO, You'd be best to spend 1 night in Apollo Bay and 1 in Warrnambool ( great playground for kids) then drive to Ballarat from there (2 hrs via Mortlake, Lismore)
