I assume you are visiting over the next few months due to the Teeselaar tulip festival? The places that you will want to visit will all need to be accessed by a car except for St Kilda (can go by tram) & Melb CBD (explore by foot or free tram in city centre). Puffing Billy can be accessed via a Metro train but if you're going to hire a car for the rest of the trip, you may as well drive up.

We need more information please.

Whether self drive or tour is best depends on various things including details of the travellers.

Your title says we and your text says I. Who exactly is travelling?

Can you do overnight stays or have you booked accommodation in Melbourne already and are limited to day trips?

Btw if you are visiting the tulip festival I assume your trip is in early spring?

The GOR needs a minimum of two overnight stops. The end of September is the spring school holidays it would be advisable to pre book accommodation rather than risk looking for it on the run.

The Great Ocean Road needs two different overnight stops along it and return on the third day via the inland if you want to drive it yourselves. That is a significant investment of time so it depends on how interested you are to see it.

The alternative is to take a one day tour which saves a lot of time and lets you enjoy the scenery while an experienced local driver concentrates on the route. Some of the tour companies get very good reviews but it is a very long tiring day.

Phillip Island is popular for the penguins (among other things). The penguins come in from the sea at dusk so it can be a good idea to stay overnight on Phillip Island.

I hope you'll come back and tell us more about how you picture your trip going. The more you input the better we can advise you.

Suggest the following:

Day 1 - Melbourne, overnight Melb.

Day 2 - Melb, St Kilda, o/n Melb.

Day 3 - pick up car, Mar Wildlife Park, Phillip Island, o/n PI.

Day 4 - Puffing Billy, o/n Dandenongs.

Day 5 - Tesselaars, parrots, o/n Dandenongs or Melb.

Day 6 - Werribee Zoo, o/n Geelong.

Day 7 - GOR, o/n Apollo Bay.

Day 8 - GOR, o/n Warrnambool.

Day 9 - drive to airport.

Of course, this will only work if you have an afternoon or evening flight home. Make sure you do the Melbourne part of your trip first and get over the worst of the jet lag before you try to drive anywhere. Driving after dusk is not recommended due to the high risk of hitting wildlife on the roads. Dusk in September will be around 5.30pm. Daylight Savings starts in October, so dusk will be an hour later.

GOR I intend only to commit 2d1n trip since we trying to go other places as well.

It's our 1st trip hence we would to enjoy the cbd plus the other parts n attraction in Melbourne. I would love to try public transportation to see the views but just worry certain areas are not able to go thru by that. We want a relaxing no rush2 trip.

Day 1 (reach melb) night 7.20pm ( likely unable to see much so we rest our day in the air bnb or hotel

Day 2 around cbd (free tram) n probably go to Melbourne tourist centre?

Day 3 to Weribee zoo plus other places to view around the area (werribee plaza)

Day 4

Day 5

Day 6

Day 7 tulip festival and others than we can go. Intend to spend half a day. Back to cbd to have a good dinner to celebrate birthday

Day 8

Day 9 last min for enjoying the time before head to airport in afternoon (6pm flight)
