Most small businesses are open from 9am to 5pm. In the Touristy areas they may stay open longer. Restaurants should be open until latish, but don't expect to be able to walk into a restaurant to start a meal on a weekday after about 8pm. The best place to find things open is Salamanca and North Hobart (Elizabeth Street).

There are a few big supermarkets that open early (7am) and stay open very late (10pm or midnight), but they are in the suburbs.

The links on this page are useful for info on "nightlife" in pubs, bars etc. Despite what the page says about stuff happening every night, the busy nights are Friday and Saturday nights. tripadvisor.com.au/Travel-g255097-s402/Hobar…

Pubs in the city centre can be rowdy on Friday and Saturday nights, especially after midnight. Bars in the big hotels and the touristy areas of Salamanca and around the docks are better.

Woolworths in Sandy Bay is open until midnight, but as Luigi mentioned you may struggle finding somewhere to eat after around 8pm, so make sure you either book or head in early :)

If you have the energy for nightlife I reckon you're not doing your Tassie days right, strange first question if I may say, it's a holiday so you're going away from what you do at home and you are going to . . I don't know, what is it you are hoping for from your holiday; apart from a few ghost tours of historic places and Australia's first casino I can't imagine why nighttime activities would be your primary focus, so what made you choose Tasmania?

thanks Lugi.

its not primary focus, day itinerary is already repeated in e forum, and thanks to experts like Lugi we can plan w/o much ques asked. not sure if you've been to other parts of the world where day starts as early as 6am n end past midnight and we can continue holidaying like that for straight two weeks. we don't get tired so easily? to emphasize, night activity is not a MUST, its just exploring options when planning holiday.

Yes, busy things happen in busy parts of the world. Tasmania is not busy. We don't need to start anything at 6am. :)

Tassie is 100 times larger than Singapore but has 1/10th of the population. Hobart's population is a little over 200,000. I can introduce you to them if you's like?

What is "e forum"?

I looked for your itinerary before posting and you have not asked any other questions about your Tasmania itinerary here, which is a real shame because the Tassie forum regulars do a wonderful job; and I still reckon If you have the energy for nightlife you're not doing your Tassie days right, also are you driving, because if you are driving long unfamiliar routes during the day after being at a bar until 3am or whatever it is you do at home, you ought to think about the consequences of getting breathalyzed or worse.
