Hobart and the East coast then back ...best way

Arriving in Hobart on the Thursday 6th Jan 2013 around lunch - plan to stay 3 days and take in Salamanca markets Sat - n these 3 days we will do the south - Port Arthur , Richmond, Huon Valley. We then have to be back in Hobart on the 8th to fly out on the 9th early, so have 2 nights to spend elsewhere.

We want to see Freycinet and Launceston...would we go the east coast road- stay in an east coast town like Bicheno...then onto Launceston and stay somewhere near there ..then down the Midlands Highway back to Hobart????

Is this doable in the 3 days we have after Hobart?

What East coast town do you recommend ?

Where near Launceston is quaint?

Thanks all...love the cherry eating idea ...have booked the 3 nights in Hobart in the Grand Old Duke Battery Point...will do that area and the markets - have booked a night in Bicheno by the Bay so will enjoy the East coast and then will travel to Launceston and have booked a night there in Twofourtwo .

Will then drive back to Hobart for a night with friends before flying out early morning.

All Good. The only problem is car hire .....want to be able to drop off the hire car at the airport early as we have a 6.00am flight out but the car hire places say they don't open till later????

What is the alternative?????? Dropping it off in town and then how do you get to the airport??

Yes, you could drop the car off in the city the night before - if it's one of the companies with a city office - then get either of these two shuttles:

Hi Rob,

I was reading your advise on the above itinerary....we are arriving on 6th Dec, Thurs and flying out of Hobart on 12 Dec. I will follow your advise of driving straight to Port Arthur, and coming back on Sat to Hobart for the market. Still thinking what to do after that. There is no way we can make a driving trip to Cradle Mountain and be back in Hobart on 12th right? Any advise for my family? Thanks

Hi Gus,

You can, but it takes a lot of driving.

Thurs 6 - Stay Hobart - day drives

Friday 7 - stay Hobart - day drives

Saturday 8 - stay Hobart - Salamanca Markets & day drives

Sunday 9 – leave early from Hobart drive and stay at Strahan – 5 hour drive

Monday 10 – morning cruise Strahan, afternoon drive to Cradle stay Cradle Mt – 2.5 hour drive

Tuesday 11- morning walks, leave around lunch - drive to Launceston stay Launceston – 2.5 hour drive

Wednesday 12 - drive to Hobart Airport - drive down Midland Highway – 2.5 to 3 hour drive

or

Thursday 6 - stay Port Arthur

Friday 7 - stay Port Arthur

Saturday 8 - stay Hobart - Salamanca Markets & day drives

Sunday 9 – leave early from Hobart drive and stay at Strahan – 5 hour drive

Monday 10 – morning cruise Strahan, afternoon drive to Cradle stay Cradle Mt – 2.5 hour drive

Tuesday 11- morning walks, leave around lunch - drive to Launceston stay Launceston – 2.5 hour drive

Wednesday 12 - drive to Hobart Airport - drive down Midland Highway – 2.5 to 3 hour drive

As you can see, lots and lots of driving.

One thing you do have in your favour is lots of day light hours. Around the time you are travelling there will be approximately 15 hours of day light :o)

Safe travels - Robert
