Don't miss the Midlands

Seems most people are swayed by the multinational hotel chains and their travels on our island and do the loop around the edge and miss the heart of Tasmania. So if you are after a real experience of Tasmania , it's history , people and even a bit of culture & shopping thrown in , a drive along the Heritage Highway is a must. If you perhaps only have time for 1 stop, Oatalnds is the real gem along the highway.

It has the most sandstone georgian buildings in the southern hemisphere , quaint accomadation options and eateries. As well the High Street for some retail therapy. Antique shops , clothing makers & my favourite shop in the whole of Tasmania 3 Windows Gallery , which has an array of locally made arts (glass art is even made on the premises) as well as gorgeous gift wares such as colourful leather bags , jewellery from all over the world , lush body and bath products even some gourmet sweet treats.

The PureTasmania ad campaign on the mainland, run by Federal Hotels, is very effective, in part because it fills a gap left by the absence of Tourism Tasmania from the market. And Federal does have some nice venues.

I think that all Tasmanians can help their state by compensating on this forum for the deficiencies of our state tourism agency. God knows, if they did any less, we'd have to send them to the Fox Eradication Task Force, too.

And as for the Tassie Midlands; Oatlands is lovely, as are Ross, Kempton, Bothwell and Campbelltown.
