Accommodation between Richmond and Port Arthur

We are flying into Hobart for a hectic 8 night statewide trip in February and by the time we get our hire car, it will be about 6pm. We will be staying in the Hobart area for a couple of days at the end of our trip so want to head off elsewhere for the first night in Tassie. We plan to go to Port Arthur the next day/night in any case but wondered whether to stay the first night in Richmond (is there a lot to see there?) or head south straight away? Also has anyone stayed at Steeles Island Retreat (Beach Cottage) which is apparently only 1/2 hour from Hobart - would a night there enroute to Port Arthur be a good alternative to Richmond?

There are a few things to do in Richmond but by 6pm they will all be closed. You have Richmond gaol, model village, bridge etc. Google Richmond and it will come up with the attractions.Keep in mind Port Arthur is a full day to see it all. There are a few things to see on the way to Port Arthur; sorrell fruit farm (pick own fruit), chocolate factory, eagle hawk neck. doo town. Go on the ghost tour at Port Arthur. Grab a see tasmania visitors card, you will get into attractions at a reduced rate available 3, 7 and 10 days. Haven't stayed at steeles island retreat.

Thanks for your help, have decided to head straight south and stay close to Port Arthur for the 2 nights. Is the fruit farm far from Port Arthur and is it easy to find?

Sorell Fruit Farm is just (and I mean just) past the Sorell boundary as you head to Port Arthur

It's not a bad idea staying the first night in Richmond, since it's reasonably close to the airport and worth seeing anyway. The shops and galleries will be closed, but there are lots of B&Bs, and some good restaurants and pubs there (eg The Richmond Wine Centre and Prospect House). You can have dinner, stroll around and have a look at the bridge and historic buildings by night, and then have breakfast and a little poke about the Gaol, the Richmond Maze and other attractions in the morning before you leave for Port Arthur. There's not heaps to do, but it's a pretty village and a nice place to spend time. I went there for Sunday lunch with some friends recently and we ended up getting an old-fashioned portrait taken - it was great fun!

You could also stay in Sorell or Dunalley on the way to Port Arthur, although there's likely to be less choice of accommodation there than at Richmond.
