im back

hi everyone

just back from Hobart , only had a few days down there so everything was pretty well crammed it . i'm exhausted after it , but so glad I did cram it all in .

we flew with jetstar syd-hob special $100 return pp , plane left on time . landed in Hobart 10.30 , walked over to the hertz counter and picked up our car , drove to Grosvenor court apartments in sandy bay , checked in early then off to the Salamanca markets.

this has pretty surroundings , but it is mostly over priced handicraft .lovely to walk around though .

we found where the ghost tour starts , its located in the 24 hour bakery in behind the markets , but @ $25pp to walk around in the cold and dark , we decided to give it a miss.

off to Hobart for a look around the shops , it was pretty cold outside and found when you walk into a shop you nearly died of heat exhaustion...they had the heat up that high it was unbearable , considering you have come in from the cold all rugged up!

back to the hotel for a shower and then off to dinner at the drunken admiral restaurant , I had pre-booked thinking that they had a winter special 3 courses for $29 pp .....when we got there they said , yes we have that special ....everyday except today ....that would be right !

I ended up having garlic prawns in curry banana sauce , sounded disgusting , but I thought i'de give it a go ....it was delish ! we walked out full as googs and $110 lighter in the pocket for 2 drinks ,1 entree , garlic bread and 2 mains ......we bumped into a local who told us to hit the pubs back at he markets , which we did , very expensive on the drinks , but we ran into the local again and we had a very funny night ! left around 12 as we had an early morning.

up early this morning & off to Richmond , we went through the goal $5 pp which was freezing inside ...I couldn't believe it , drove around and saw some other attractions then headed off to port Arthur.{very interesting }. $25pp

after that we went to the Tassie devil zoo....wow I didn't think so much noise could come from such a little thing . $22 pp

finally back to the hotel at around 5.30 for a shower & off to dinner, we found a lovely little restaurant in sandy bay in a back street called " waxed " 5 Gregory st ......what a feed ! we shared a bruschette $12 ( a bit dear only 3 slices ) hubby had pizza ...it was the largest pizza I had ever seen ....Sunday special , pizza and a jug of beer for $20, I had chicken Caesar salad $14.50 absolutely beautiful .....I would highly recommend this place .

too tired too venture over to the casino tonight so we headed off back for an early night .

up early again this morning , we went for a drive up mt Wellington .......woooohooooo I finally got to se snow ! there was only a little bit up there but it was a great drive to the top , the road is wide and well maintained .......loved the drive up , loved the view and it wasn't even that cold really !

then we were off to the cascade brewery tour , this was very interesting , staff were very friendly , we could have sat back taste testing all day in there bar ! we brought a few souvenirs here that are very reasonably priced .

we dragged ourselves away as we had to get to the Cadbury factory ....this being my first time here , I cannot compare to what it was like years ago , but I can say I enjoyed it , you don't go into the kitchens , but you do se how chocolates are coated and boxed and wrapped , I found it very interesting and am glad that I still decided to go there . I did have reservations on going after reading some reviews , but I am glad I went .....then of coarse there where the chockies that you get at a cheaper rate ! yummo !

we drove back through the suburbs and had a leisurely look around , there are some beautiful buildings and houses around Hobart , most are very well kept in there former beauty.

well done Tassie residents !

back to the hotel for a shower , then off to the pub , toots at sandy bay ...once again it was so hot inside ....played some keno and had a few drinks until dinner time , we walked across the rd to " the oriental restaurant " 150 - 152 sandy bay rd , sandy bay ......beautiful food , great service , we had a banquette for 2 , $25 pp we got chicken and corn soup , spring rolls , 3 dishes , fried rice , desert & tea or coffee ....it was fantastic !! highly recommend this place too .

off to the casino we go .....what a let down , our local rsl club has more pokies than this place ......had 2 drinks and left .

up at 4am to catch our 6am flight back to syd with jetstar .....we left early , but had to slow down at syd airport as our terminal wasn't vacant , so that wasn't jetstars fault at all , if this hadn't have happened we would have arrived early !

all in all we had a great trip , I really think you need more time than what we had to truly soak it all up , but I was glad I went .

I forgot to say the cascade tour was $20 and the Cadbury tour was $25 .........its not cheap when 2 of you are going into all these places when everything is around the $25 ......it all adds up pretty quickly !

we also went to " the woman's factory " near the cascade brewery .

not a lot to see there but a lot of reading in folders in the office and in the remains on a memorial wall plaque ......

some very sad stuff to be read ,indeed ! ....it puts in a somewhat sombre mood , so I was glad we done this at the end of the day .....after the chocky factory

always good to hear how others see our little land down south.. nice review... all those places are worth it.. but you are right.. you need at least 10 days for hobart to check out the sites, we are written off alot by the mainlanders but i live in mexico now and every person, most of which are american have heard of tasmania and no where else in australia, so i always have a tassie flag flying on the beach here in cabo san lucas, mexico... visit tassie!
