We are heading for Tasmania on a 9 day fly/drive arriving 9/5/13 to 17/5/13. Flying in and out of Hobart. We are considering basing ourselves in Hobart and Launceston during this period and visiting places of interest from there. Could anybody advise the best way to visit the most popular places maximising our time. Also which would be the best river cruise to do? We are looking at places around the east coast and midlands (not the west coast at this stage). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The better river cruises (Arthur, Pieman and Gordon Rivers) are all on the west coast.

There are several excellent coastal boat trips on the eastern side. There are fast boat trips around the Tasman Peninsula or Bruny Island and others in the Derwent Estuary: Details on this page: tripadvisor.com.au/Travel-g255097-c141895/Ho…

There's another at Freycinet. http://www.freycinetseacharters.com/

I'd plan on a circle from Hobart east to Port Arthur and the Tasman Peninsula, then up the east coast via Freycinet and then to Launceston, a side trip to Cradle Mountain, then down the Midland Highway back to Hobart.

Agree, the west coast is the place for river tours. But Tasman Peninsula and Bruny Island IMO have the best cruises, well I'm not sure you should call them a cruise, I'd call them a high speed joy ride, they really are good.

Derwent River have their cruises, so does the Tamar if you're looking for a cruise at a slower pace.

Like this Hobart one - captainfellshistoricferries.com.au/Cruises.h…

Launceston - http://www.tamarrivercruises.com.au/

I haven't been on the Wineglass Bay cruise, it does look good though.

The circuit mentioned be Luig is probably your best option, make sure you have enough time on the Tasman Peninsula, there's plenty to see.

IMO you should not base yourself too long in Hobart or Launceston, there's a plethora of beautiful smaller towns in Tas that have wonderful accommodation and places to eat. If you base most of your time in 1 or 2 places you will be back tracking a fair bit.

And make sure allow a bit of time down the Midlands Highway (Heritage Highway) great drive when you detour of the highway to the historic towns.

Safe travels - Robert

Thanks for your advice. It looks as though there is so much to see. As we only have 9 days I think this time round we will just be staying at Hobart and Launceston with maybe a stop somewhere in between. I will take what you have said on board and hopefully it will be a good trip.
