Bicheno to Launceston

Hi,

I am planning a 10 day driving holiday for next March. We will be driving from Bicheno to Launceston, how long is the drive if we go via Sy Helen's and will we have time to see the bay of fires and any other attractions own the way? Or are we better to head inland A4 or B34 (recommendations please) and what is there to stop and see if we go this way?

Thanks Sue

It's about 4 hours drive from Bicheno to Launceston via St Helens, but you should make a full day of it.

You can get to Bay of Fires beach by heading toward Binalong Bay from St Helens. Just before Binalong, turn left toward the Gardens. The road runs along the edge of the beach.

Between St Helens and Launceston, there's Pyengana Cheese, Ralph's Falls and St Columba Falls, Derby Tin Mine Centre and the Tin Dragon Trail Walk are worthy of a stop on the way to Scottsdale. This area is famed for its Chinese settler history. From Scottsdale, you also pass Bridestowe Lavender, Hollybank Adventures and Hillwood Bery Farm on the way back to Launceston.

From Scottsdale, you could also go via George Town. At George Town you could stop to see the sloop "Norfolk" at the Bass and Flinders Centre, the convict Watch House, Low Head Lighthouse, and the Pilot Station. There are also several wineries, including Bay of Fires, Jansz, Dalrymple, Delamere and Sinapius at nearby Pipers River.

The B34 is the quickest route to Launceston - just under 2.5 hours. there's not much to see along the way, but you could take a short detour to Ross for the convict era sights and also to Longford for Woolmers and Brickendon.

The A4 is a little bit longer. it goes via picturesque St mary's and also the small towns of Fingal and Avoca and you could detour via the even smaller town of Cornwall. Worth a look.

Hope this helps,

Luigi
