Oodnadatta track

We're planning to drive from Port Augusta to Alice Springs in late June - early July. We had thought to drive to William Creek, spend a couple of days at Coward Springs (fitting in a flight over Lake Eyre) then a couple of nights in Coober Pedy, and then do another long leg to Alice. We were wondering about travelling to William Creek on the Oodnadatta Track in Subaru Forester? Any thoughts or advice?

This is the road between Coober Pedy and Williams Creek: nickbooth.id.au/Outback11/…d3mudroad.jpg

The Forester should be fine provided it is not wet. In rain, the road turns to mud.

If there has been rain they close the road. It was closed for most of winter 2010. You need to check here before you travel. http://www.dpti.sa.gov.au/OutbackRoads

In fact it had been raining not long before that picture was taken, and the 6-wheel Land Cruiser (with 6-wheel drive) was sliding all over the road.

But the problem is people ignore the road closed signs and plough on through making it more of a mess for the road crews to fix later.

Agreed. But there were no road closed signs on this road at the time.

Thanks Nozzie, I had found that website, which was what actually got us thinking maybe we might be able to manage in the Forester, but then read other info that suggested 4WD only - anyway, we'll keep checking and hope for no rain at time we"re coming through. And it's great to see Nick"s photo to get some idea of what the road's like.
