Best Island for viewing sealife with 6 and 12 year old?

We are wanting to stay on an Island for 5 days following a family wedding in Sydney in February.

We would like to take the children- 6 & 12, snorkelling off the beach and on a glass bottom boat so they can appreciate the wonderful sea life of the Great Barrier Reef.

Family are staying on Lindeman Island, but perhaps Daydream, Dunk or Lady Elliot Island would suit us better?

Any guidance would be appreciated.

We have just come back from 10 days on Lindeman island with a 6 and 8 year old and could not recommend it highly enough. The rooms are basic but comfortable and we found there was so much to do that we weren't in our room very much anyway.

For example, our kids did activities both with us and with the kids club (they have 4 of these - 1 for toddlers, then 4-7 year olds, 8-12 year olds and then teens; all supervised and run by great staff with a good staff to child ratio. Kids don't have to be signed in for the whole day but can sign in and out as often as they or you want to do the activites that they are interested in). Activites they did included: circus school, trapeze, juggling, sailing, kayaking, swimming, picnics, archery, bush walking, cooking, table tennis, tennis, golf, creative making sessions, 8 ball, pettanque, tye dye t-shirts, beach volleyball, indoor soccer, beach play, clown and pirate hunts, playground play, games, performed in two of the nightly performances and a talent show and they had evening activites for kids as well as adults; the 8 year old also did an introduction to scuba diving course.

Because of the fabulos kids cllubs, adults can also get some time out for themselves to sun by one of the 2 pools (one is adults only), read, do activites etc. If you want to you can even have evening meals just the two of you.

Apart from the friendly staff, one of the great features is that it is all inclusive so all meals, snacks, drinks (including alcohol) are included. For people with children it means that you are not telling them off all the time for not eating or telling them to stop asking for more to eat and drink. They were able to try new foods and if they didn't like them it was not a big problem as they could go and choose something else.

The only things that cost extra if you want to do them are day trips such as viewing the local coral, snorkelling on a trip off the island, a picnic to another nearby island, going to the barrier reef, and teh day spa etc. All expenses that you would have to pay for at other islands.

Also, talking with staff who have worked at mulitple islands and toher travellers we met on the plane - Lindeman deifnaitely has the best value for money and activities for families. Hope you have a fabulous time wherever you go.

As mentioned Lindeman's is a great island for families - its bigger than Daydream with more activities. The reef however is not just off the beach, you would have to do a tour.

Dunk Island is another island which offers heaps of activities for kids but again there is no reef off the beach.

For seeing marine life - Heron island or Lady Elliott Island.

Daydream is nice, but if you already have other family staying at Lindeman I would do the same. It offers very good value for money with all meals and drinks included, the rooms are clean and comfortable (but basic) however you are not in your rooms too much. The staff are fantastic.....they certainly will keep your kids entertained so you will be able to also relax and enjoy your holiday. The adults only pool is nice and quiet, and next to it you can also find the day spa.
