Box Jelly Fish (Stingers)

Could any one help me. My husband to be and I are currently looking to book some days of our honeymoon on Daycream Island. However we are going at the end of February and have read a number reports of the water being infested with box jelly fish near the shore, does the same apply for the Island or is it safe to swim without a Stinger suit.

yes there are stingers around the island and it would be extremely ill-advised to go swimming in the sea without a suit on.

Scameron, ignore posts where the tragically misinformed say that the larger box jellyfish and the wee little Irakundji "won't kill". They do. A simple web search will show up interesting info confirming the threat they pose.

However, you don't need to get paranoid about them as they (or their relatives) exist in all tropical waters around the world but you need to take sensible precautions swimming in the ocean. The pool at Daydream is a really good one so stick with it. Otherwise, use a stinger suit if you're tempted to swim off the beach.

The local university in Townsville, JCU, is doing a lot of work on the habits of these critters but at this point, little is known about them.

Thankyou to everyone for your helpful comments. We are not really Pool based people as we like to spend as much time swimming and diving as possible so may be we need to rethink.
