We will be coming back to Australia this September. This time we want to snorkel the GBR again--it has been over 15 years since last we were there. Gotta see those giant clams, ribbon reefs, soft corals, fish!
First trip was based in Pt. Douglas and we did the 2 Quiksilver trips (1992). Then we went to Lizard in 1996.
My husband wants to go to Lizard.
Lizard was fine and I understand it's improved, BUT it costs the earth (US has NOT had wage growth in the last 10 years!) and they charge quite a bit for the snorkel trips to the outer reef.
Snorkeling fom shore there in 1996 was OK, best part was the Clam Garden, but we did not like taking the boats out into the lagoon. Maybe they have better lagoon maps, etc now? At the time, it was an uncomportable tin boat (In was covered with bruises from climbing back in with no ladder) and a flare gun and "we'll look for you if you are not back by 5" and that was not all that fun. We did not find great spots and thought it was a waste of time in the lagoon.
So, what is it like now?
How did you like the outer reef snorkeling trips? Where did you go?
How does the resort handle lagoon snorkeling now? Better maps? Did you find good places to go? If you have been to Hawaii, for example, how did the lagoon snorkeling compare--did you find clear water and lovely corals in the lagoon?
Would you say that the outer reeef trips and the Watsons Bay coral garden and the only really good snorkel spots?
Thanks for your help and updated intormation!
