Sunshine coast airport to Rainbow beach

Hi,

can someone help me find the easiest/cheapest way how to get to Rainbow beach? i will be flying from Sydney to Sunshine coast on Nov 13, arrival around 9,30 am and i want to get to Rainbow beach where i want to sleep over and the next day to continue to Fraser island and rent a 4 WD for a 2 days. only transport i found is a shuttle service http://www.coolconnect.com.au/pricing.php.

is there any public transport or trains available? i would like to hire a car after the Fraser island part and continue to drive back to Sydney. is there a car hire place in Rainbow beach or i would need to get into a bigger town firstly?

Thanks for help, Misa

Hi MisaSm,

First thing and I need to ask, have you driven on soft sand. Fraser Island has very fine soft sand in many places. If Fraser Island has had low rainfall many tracks will have very deep ruts, making it difficult to drive even for experienced drivers. For track condition it would be worth talking to Rob from Emeraldene Inn at Hervey Bay (I have no connection or interest with Emeraldene), Rob is always willing to help those on TA wanting to see Fraser Island and Fraser Coast -

Sunshine Coast Airport to Rainbow Beach –

Via bus and train.

Catching a transfer from SC Airport to a railway station say Pomona, then getting a train, which then you’ll have to get off at Gympie to catch a transfer to Rainbow Beach with a company like Pollies, IMO a lot of mucking around.

IMO your best option with this scenario is to catch a direct transfer from S C Airport to Rainbow Beach via Coolconnect – http://www.coolconnect.com.au/

There are a couple of 4 x 4 renters at Rainbow Beach. You will need to take everything with you, and the renters are very fussy on the condition you return their vehicles. If you drive through salt water you may lose you deposit, so think twice about hiring and driving a 4 x 4 on Fraser Island

I believe your best option is to get yourself to Hervey Bay, there’s a station in Hervey Bay, and get a tour from Hervey Bay. With the cost and difficulties of hiring a 4 x 4 for just 2 days, grab a tour. In addition to what’s mentioned above about deposits with some rental companies, you have to get your own permits, book your barge tickets and you have to take everything, cooking equipment, food, water, absolutely everything. You will need to drop your tyre pressure to travel on the sand, you should take a snatch strap in case you get bogged (hopefully the renter will have these). It’s a lot of work for a couple of days, i'm not trying to be negative it is well worth it but there's still a lot of if’s and buts.

IMO I believe you should go to Hervey Bay, catch a tour from there, some tours stay overnight on Fraser Island. After your Fraser Island fix, hire a car at Hervey Bay and head south back to Sydney.

Good idea Misa as using 4WD is not that easy if your not experienced.

Enjoy !
