Short visit

I'm staying in Brisbane and have Aug 25th is my only free day to explore. Will I have time to get out to the Reef? What service do you recommend I use to experience the beauty?

Brisbane is not near the reef, you would need to fly a couple hours north to one of the cities that has reef access, then do a boat tour from the mainland as the reef is a couple of hours of the coast. Not really something you can do in a day from Brisbane.

If you reeeeallllly had to do it, you could catch an early morning flight to Cairns and get in early enough to join one of the tours (they all leave at around 9am) then do a day on the reef, get back into town at about 4.30, then catch an early evening flight back to Brisbane. Pretty huge and expensive day just to spend 2 hours snorkeling though.

It can be done - but not out of Cairns. That's too far north. This company:

do day trips to the Reef by seaplane to Lady Elliot Island out of Redcliff (a suburb of Brisbane) - but it's not a cheap day out. You won't get the variety of marine life at LEI that you would further north, but it's still pretty impressive.

You are best to fly for the day to Lady Elliott Island see link below.

Other option is to fly to Bundaberg & hire a car to drive to the town of 1770. - tour to Lady Musgrave Island & Fitzroy Lagoon.

Hi Keith

Only way to do it is the 1 Day Lady Elliot Island Tour from Brisbane. Lady Elliot is highly recommended for anyone looking to see the GBR and this tour goes over the island by seaplane which is why you can depart from Brisbane. Most tours go by boat and going by air means you will get a spectacular view of the Reef and Lady Elliot Island. There are a restricted amount of people allowed on the island each day to meet sustainable environment practices but this also means you will have the most premium experience.
