Feb Honeymoon - Gold Coast or GBR??

iance and I have never been to Australia before so I wanted some advice from those who live/vacation here often. We would be flying into Sydney so I am debating between the Gold Coast or GBR (we would not have time to do both) but I am not sure which would be best for a honeymoon.

The weather/stinger situation by the GBR is not ideal - however it would be amazing to see regardless.

I have heard the GC has a Vegas feeling to it, which don't get me wrong I love Vegas but prolly not ideal for a honeymoon.

I am posting this in both forums, but which would you choose and why? We are both 29 and are looking for a great pool and/or beach to relax with a cocktail, ability to walk to different restaurants, some nightlife available (nothing that crazy, a nice place to grab a drink and listen to come music is perfect).

Thanks!

What time of the year would you be here, and for how long?

We would be there end of February into March. After we land in Sydney we would spend a couple nights there and then head up to the GBR for about 5 or 6 nights until we head back to Sydney for our flight home.

I've been to both the Gold Coast and (multiple times) to the GBR. I would choose the GBR in a heartbeat over the Gold Coast, especially for a honeymoon!

Since you are looking for a great beach, you'll probably want to base yourself outside of Cairns which does not have a beach. Look at places such as Palm Cove (a northern suburb of Cairns) or Port Douglas.

GBR would be my pick for a honeymoon. Port Douglas is lovely - fairly small and relatively quiet but with some nightlife, bars, great restaurants, boutiques, galleries, etc. Can walk pretty much everywhere. Beautiful beach (has 'stinger nets or enclosures' so you can safely swim) - you can walk for miles along the beach and many sections will be virtually 'people free'. Lots to do if you want some activity - can go horse riding along the beach (no experience needed), kayaking, hire a dinghy or pontoon boat, etc.

From PD you can do GBR tours and Daintree Rainforest tours. PD is about 1 hour's drive from Cairns (there are shuttle buses) - the drive itself is quite lovely too.

Other options I'd suggest for a honeymoon would be Hamilton Island (in the Whitsundays), and Noosa Heads (about 2 hours north of Brisbane).

Hamilton Island - can do GBR trips from here too. Great accommodation choices with some nice restaurants, some nightlife, a few shops/boutiques/galleries, plenty of 'activities', nice beach, fab pool.

Can get direct flights from Sydney to Hamilton Island (just over 2 hours).

Noosa Heads is lovely but a lot 'busier' and more developed than PD or HI (but nowhere near as chaotic as the Gold Coast) - still has a nice 'beachy' feel. Heaps of restaurants, nightlife/bars, great shops, etc. Lovely beach. Plenty to do if you choose. The hinterland is beautiful with mountains, forests and pretty little towns with lots of craft shops, markets, etc. Fly direct into Maroochydore airport from Sydney (about a 1.5 hour flight) then shuttle bus to Noosa (just under an hour).

Regarding weather in general - although Feb/March is still the wet season in Queensland, it will still be nice and warm even if it rains, and the ocean will be quite warm to swim in. You are likely to get some torrential downpours at times, but these are often shortlived and followed by sunshine. It generally doesn't rain all day or rain continuously day after day, but of course that may happen. The weather is 'predictably unpredictable' particulary up north, but also in any of the eastern states. So hope for the best, but have a few contingency plans for wet weather - shouldn't be a problem on your honeymoon :)

Don't book a GBR cruise until you arrive - that way you can check the weather forecasts and pick the best day. You'll have no trouble getting on a cruise at a day's notice.

I wouldn't put GC in the vegas bracket :o) I would say most people label it that way due to the highrise accommodation and the clubs, thankfully only one casino. I would say GC is more akin to the Miami Florida style. GC has some lovely areas that are far and away from the Gold Coast glitz, but if you like the glitz, it's the place to stay.

For a honeymoon couple I would suggest, flying to Cairns, hiring a vehicle (for convenience) and staying at Palm Cove. It's quieter, some nice restaurants, luxurious & pampering accommodation, and if you really want someting else to do, you'll have the car.

Cairns and Port Douglas are only a half hour from PC in opposite directions, just about bang in the middle of both.

Safe travels - Robert

Keep in mind the weather and remember it is cyclone season in Feb/march for the far north qld area.

You will also potentially get a fair share of rain on the GC in summer as well.

Normally I would say Port Douglas but Feb is NOT a good time of the year - its hot, humid & sticky; plus its stinger season..

www.marinestingers.com.au so not appealing & you also have the threat of cyclones.

depending on your budget ?

I love staying at The Sheration at Main beach on the Gold Coast. Its the only hotel that has direct beach access on the coast. The hotel has also recently been renovated & is looking gorgeous.

starwoodhotels.com/sheraton/…

There are plenty of fab restaurants (high end) & shops too just across the road from the hotel in the Marina Mirage.

Gold Coast has beautiful surfing beaches ... there are nice pockets of the Gold Coast which IMO in Feb would be 100% better than dealing with the humidity (wet season) in Nth Qld.

The other hotel which would suit honeymooners is the exclusive Palazzo Versace across the road from The Sheraton.

Happy planning !
