PD in December

We are flying from the UK to Oz in Decemeber to stay with family in Melbourne for Xmas. On the way we plan to spend a few days in PD and then Syndey. We are a family for 4 ( 2 Adults, 9 year old and 6 year old) and are looking at a few suggestions for hotels. We know the weather is going to be very hot so thought a hotel with a shaded pool would be a good idea. We have looked at lots of hotels (Regal, Cyman Villas, coral sea, Outrigger Heritage) but we think the Hibiscus looks favourite as it seems very central and reasonably priced. We are also looking for suggestions for activities, we have heard about "breakfast with the birds" and we are also interested in some snorkeling.

Breakfast with the Birds is at the Rainforest Habitat just off the main PD to Cairns road. It's well worth it! Stay and tour the whole park as well.

For snorkelling, you have a few options. Wavelength is a small boat that only takes snorkellers. Silver Sonic is a bigger boat that you can do intro dives from, but also goes to great snorkelling locations. Quicksilver is a huge boat that goes to a pontoon out at the reef so you have some solid footing (might be good for the kids).

Here are the websites for the companies mentioned:

If you've looked at them all and like the idea of staying at Hibiscus, then go for it, it is a great resort a minutes walk into town, has a great feel about it,one that really makes you feel like you're on holidays.

Activities as mentioned, Breakfast with the Birds, always a winner especially for our overseas visitors,a place where the children can get very close to our koalas, feed kangaroos and wallabies among other natives.

The toad races are also becoming a family favourite, held at the Ironbar, a few nights a week and lots of good fun.

A day to the reef and the rainforest would be a must.Again as mentioned,Wavelength is great is you're snorkelling only, but if you're into diving or plan to attempt a dive,I would go Poseidon (they visit the best reefs)or Haba.

With the rainforest, you have two choices,as a self driver or on a organised tour.If you want help there, let me know.

There are lots of activities in the area to suit the whole family and a trip to Kuranda via the train and Skyrail would also be a winner, you can also include Tjapukai Aboriginal park in that, where the children can experience a dreamtime dance,a laser show, boomerang and spear throwing.

Let me know if you need more info on anything.

Thanks for the feedback, I was slightly concerned about the quality of the Hibiscus. It looks great and its a bit less than some others. Is it a case of "you get what you pay for" or is it just a great price?
